Why we love to Drum with REAL drums! 🥁🔊
To adults, it might just sound like a lot of noise. But to a baby and toddler’s brain, hitting a drum is a massive sensory and physical workout! With a REAL drum listen to all the different sounds we can make with one instrument.
Every time they strike that drum, they are:
✨ Learning cause and effect (Big hit = big sound!)
✨ Building bilateral coordination (getting both sides of the brain talking)
✨ Internalizing a steady beat, which is a secret superpower for early language and reading skills
In our classes our real percussion drums are the hero of our Time to Play session. We explore the many ways to play, and the many ways to have fun with a drum!
Does your little one love the drum?

Coming soon… 🚨 We are excited to celebrate Churchyard Day again with you all this year on Saturday 4th June! 🎉
Big Monkey will be making a special appearance to meet you all at 11am and 2pm outside The Visit Hitchin Shop. We’ll be having a little sing-a-long for about 15 mins, and Big Monkey is more than happy to stay for a high five, or a photo.
I will also be there from 10am-4pm, where you can come say hi for some Monkey colouring in, stickers, and you’ll be able to purchase your very own Monkey and a selection of our real percussion instruments. 🎶
Small clicks, big milestones! It’s more than just making music—it’s a masterclass in coordination 🧠
Here's why I love using them in our sessions:
✨ It grows with you: from the flat grip, to the pincer grip, to the single finger grip – this instrument is perfect for any age, even teeny tiny hands 💗
✨ Precision Grip: Mastering that clicking motion builds the essential hand strength and dexterity needed for important life skills like holding cutlery 🍴 or grabbing a crayon to draw! 🖍️
✨ Hand-Eye Coordination: It takes a lot of focus to aim and click! This practice helps sync up what their eyes see with what their hands do.
✨ Cause & Effect: Every click provides instant feedback, teaching your little one that they have the power to make things happen! 💥
✨ Rhythm & Language: Finding the beat helps babies process sounds, which is a secret weapon for early language development. 🗣️
It’s amazing how much growth happens in one little "click." Come join the fun and see those skills in action! 🎶

One question I get asked a lot… “should we buy wooden or plastic maracas…” for me there is one clear winner, plastic!
Plastic maracas stay true to the real percussion instrument. This is because a plastic maraca creates a louder, crisper and clearer sound, which is much more exciting and impactful for your little ones ears and their brain.
Wooden ones, may look nicer in the house, but IMHO the thick wood muffles the sound of the maraca, making it quieter and harder to hear, they are also heavier which make them harder to shake for smaller babies. Plastic maracas are normally also cheaper! Win Win!
If you like wood, I love this for you! Try out some wood tone percussion instruments that are also great for your little ones: claves, wood blocks, guiros – come to class and try them out!
PS. If you love you the ones we use at Monkey Music you can buy them on the Monkey Music website. Or from Chamberlaine Music ✌️
