🌱 Supporting confidence with doubling and halving

Sometimes a child knows they’re finding a maths concept tricky, and doubling and halving can be one of those areas where confidence quickly takes a knock.

At Moss Tutoring, we start by listening to what a child finds difficult, then break the learning down into manageable, practical steps.

For this learner, we’ve been working on doubling and halving using a tens frame, helping them to physically see what happens when numbers are doubled or split into two equal groups. 👐🔢

This hands-on approach helps turn an abstract maths idea into something they can see, touch and understand, while giving them plenty of opportunities to practise without the pressure of getting it right first time.

It’s not just about finding the answer, it’s about building understanding, confidence and the belief that “I can do this.” 💚

We just love receiving feedback, whether it's via email or just from the students themselves ad hoc in sessions.

These pupils were struggling to get through their respective SATS and GCSE papers, and would get to the end of the allocated time with not a lot of the paper completed.

With our approach, using mock exam questions with no set timer and working through at THEIR pace and not the class and teacher's pace (who have to complete a set amount of content in a certain amount of time which is understandable...), these students were then able to complete much more of the papers and achieve better grades over all at the end of the year.

💡Know your times tables and division facts INSIDE OUT.

✅If you know these, you’ll save yourself crucial time to work out the trickier parts of the question rather than having to calculate these too.

"I bet NO ONE told you THIS about ratios:

🤫 Did you know that learning ratios for your GCSE Foundation Maths helps out with so many real life and daily activities?

Think:

✔️ Recipes often use ratios to specify the correct amounts of ingredients. For example, a recipe might call for a 2:1 ratio of flour to sugar, meaning two parts flour for every one part sugar
✔️ Understanding ratios helps with comparing prices, sales, and discounts
✔️ Ratios are used to calculate fuel consumption, distance, and time needed for a trip
✔️ Ratios are used to mix materials like concrete, ensuring the correct proportions for strength and durability

😁 And so much more!

✍️ We can help you master algebra in your exams this year. Comment YES to find out more!

It's been very busy working on introductions to BIG topics recently! With Year 9, we explored surds and how to multiply them, and in Year 8, we've been exploring ratio problems! Ratio problems are excellent practice for future life skills, such as proportioning out money and ingredients in recipes. It's been great seeing our students make so much progress with these topics!
