This week, we have been enjoying lots of fun, hands-on activities inspired by water, sand and summer holidays, while also exploring ways to help us keep cool during the warmer weather. The children have loved using their imaginations to create their own holiday experiences, from building sandcastles and exploring different textures in the sand to splashing, pouring and experimenting with water. These activities have encouraged the children to explore, investigate and develop their sensory, physical and social skills while having lots of fun.
We have also talked about how we can keep ourselves cool and safe in the summer, including the importance of drinking plenty of water, finding shade and keeping hydrated.
On Wednesday, we explored the fascinating topic of a solar eclipse. The children watched clips to learn about what happens when the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth, and we talked about how this creates an eclipse. The children then enjoyed making their own eclipses, using creative resources to represent the Sun and Moon. This provided a fun way to introduce an exciting scientific concept and encourage the children to ask questions and share their ideas.
It has been a wonderful week of summer-inspired learning, exploration and discovery, with plenty of opportunities for the children to have fun while developing their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. ☀️💦🏖️

This week, the children have enjoyed taking part in a range of activities inspired by the Commonwealth Games. They have had lots of fun getting active, trying different challenges, developing new skills and working together as a team.
Our Little Learners particularly enjoyed exploring our swimming-themed tuff tray, where they had great fun using their imaginations while developing their fine motor skills through water-inspired play.
To round off a fantastic week, the children were treated to a special visit from the ice cream van on Wednesday, making it the perfect way to cool down! There were lots of happy faces, and it was a lovely summer treat that was enjoyed by all!

Our children have been enjoying a variety of sensory tuff trays, exploring lots of different textures, scents and materials. From soft and squishy to rough and crunchy, each activity has encouraged the children to investigate, explore and learn through their senses.
Sensory play is an important part of early years development. It helps children make sense of the world around them, builds their vocabulary as they describe what they can see, feel and smell, and supports their communication, problem-solving and creative thinking. It also helps to develop fine motor skills, encourages curiosity and gives children the confidence to try new experiences.
At St Bernard's, we love creating inviting sensory experiences that encourage children to explore, investigate and learn through play. Here are just a few of the wonderful sensory activities our children have been enjoying over the last few weeks.

This week, our Little Explorers have had lots of fun building their fine and gross motor skills through a range of hands-on activities. They explored different textures using brushes, water, and their hands and fingers, enjoying getting a little messy while learning! We also continued to build on our knowledge of animals and numbers and had a fantastic time celebrating our England-themed day on Wednesday as we cheered on the team in the World Cup.

Our Little Wrigglers have been fascinated by the bugs and insects they've spotted out in the garden this week. We followed their interest by creating a bug and insect-themed tuff tray, where the children enjoyed exploring different creepy crawlies, talking about their features, and learning about where they live.

We've had a wonderful time travelling around the world as part of our World Cup theme!
The children have been exploring different countries through a range of exciting, hands-on activities. They loved investigating our South Africa tuff tray and our Egypt sand tray, where they used their imagination to create five-humped camels while developing their counting and mathematical skills.

To celebrate England's second World Cup match, the children enjoyed a variety of physical activities, including filling cups with red and white rice and taking part in a game of football. They also had lots of fun designing and creating their own footballers. We're now looking forward to England's third game on Saturday!

Our journey continued with messy flour play inspired by Switzerland, an exciting hunt for the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland, and an exploration of the Mexican desert, where the children discovered snakes, cacti and chilli plants. We finished our travels in Germany with refreshing water play while learning about the River Rhine.
