What happens when language becomes a barrier to getting your voice heard in maternity care? 📢

Bucks New University student midwife Alice Kennedy has been looking at exactly that. Drawing on her previous career as an English language teacher, Alice’s research explores whether current maternity feedback systems give every woman an equal chance to have her voice heard.

With approximately 37,000 births each year involving a mother who may struggle to communicate in English. Alice is calling for multilingual feedback forms to become a core skill for student midwives, helping women have a direct say in their care.

She’s now finished her training and is starting her career at Wexham Park Hospital, where she completed her placement. Her article, Giving Every Service User a Voice, will be published in December. 👏
