An interesting day in the studio recently. I've been on a personal quest to try and master florals and roses in particular.

Roses are tricky - or at least I think so. The colours are more desaturated than they appaer at first. All the intense, deep colour is in the centre. Then there’s lots of reflected colour, translucency and cool shadows to address.

After many, many goes, I arrived at something I was reasonably happy with. It’s not there yet but it’s starting to work for me. Reminder to self: colour on mute.

Next to it the rose painting is a throwaway board. Fellow CVPers (Creative Visionary Programme) will know all about this. It’s basically a wiping station for your brush and so by the end of your painting session, it’s also a record of the colours you’ve used. And because you care less about this board, it sometimes cuts a bit of a dash.

After all that effort and studious restraint, I decided to have at it on a 60cmx60cm canvas with plenty of expressive colour. Lessons learned, colours now full beam, any trace of a painterly bad mood exorcised.

I've just been revisiting and reframing some small works on paper. This one is from a series I made in 2021, called: Words Fail Me Sometimes - because, you know, the world. I can see things in it that still hold my attention: some muted colour and little globs of bright colour, black paint and ink to anchor it, my handwriting. These are all elements I use in experimental pieces. Sometimes they lead towards bigger more complex canvases, sometimes they hold space as markers for me, jottings in the margin.

I like paintings to develop a little like pages in a sketchbook, layers, marks, ideas all sitting alongside each other until they become something whole.

This one carries some thoughts about memory and music, heat and refuge. Letting things go and moving on. The layering and texture - those are all things I love.

Someone has enquired about this piece, which feels rather lovely

Delighted that these three works sold recently. When I look at them I see some impactful contrasts, but it's the quieter areas of more muted colour that satisfy me the most.

I seem to spend a lot of time looking at my canvases, working out what to leave, what to lose, trying to understand what the painting needs next. This one has been completely covered over now. And sometimes that's how it goes...

I love this picture. Taken just after we knocked all the walls down it shows me finding my feet in a new spacious gallery. You can just see that my hand is stretched out towards the painting as if I'm having a conversation with it. I can neither confirm or deny that I talk to myself while painting. You'd have to ask my colleagues 😂
