How Codecs Work - Tutorial 11/02/2016

Really great breakdown of how codecs work... So many people use H264, but have no idea how it works or how to use it efficiently.

Pro Video Coalition - Codecs, Codecs, Codecs - The most confusing aspect of editing 05/02/2016

I know so many 'filmmakers' that claim to understand their workflow. But the truth is, they often don't. Creativity and technology sit hand in hand when making films.
Get to know your codecs, understand how they work on each and how they work in you NLE. It will save you time!

Pro Video Coalition - Codecs, Codecs, Codecs - The most confusing aspect of editing As the title says, Codecs are probably the single most confusing thing in editing, especially in Media Composer. Most editors don't know that Me...

I generally don't class myself professionally as a DoP. I'm largely an offline / online editor by trade. But every now and then I'll get hired to shoot some short films for TV. It's always great to get a budget and hire kit in.
I have a shoot later this month with the C300 MkII and Canon Cinema Primes... Looking forward to shooting with that combination. Just happens to be the right tool for that particular job.

Resolve colourist training is starting to shine through. Finally figured out loads of technical achievements that have confused me for ages.
Highly recommend using ScopeBox with Resolve too.

Avid Training today. I've just discovered that Avid now do a monthly subscription rather than the one off payment. Where this might be more expensive in the long run, it makes the industry standard NLE far more accessible for folks like me.
Also, almost finished my Colourist Training. DaVinci Resolve 12 is one of the most splendid post production tolls I've ever used.
Next investment to save up for is a broadcast monitor.

Rockin' it with the mighty Bo Walton at the Northampton Theatre for Bernie Keith's birthday celebration!

It's been a long time since I've posted anything here. Lots of changes and transitions happening.
I'm currently looking to focus and specialise in Post-Production. Offering the following services:
* Offline Editing
* Online Edits / Conforming
* Colour Grading
* Project Finishing and Master Delivery
It's likely that audio design and mixing will be outsourced, so I'll be contacting good folks I know soon, or if anyone is interested, get in touch.
The idea, eventually, is to have an edit suite (that isn't in my flat) that will be a specialist suite.
In the meantime, I'm going back to the drawing board to look at how I can get some short films made.
Equally, if anyone has any short films that need an editor, please do get in touch and I'd be happy to discuss. I may set aside time to edit a few shorts a year.
All best wishes for the New Year,
Dave

Everything You Need to Know About DaVinci Resolve 12 27/07/2015

Anybody using DaVinci Resolve - They've released the Public Beta version of Resolve Studio 12. It has some welcome additions to the release. The editing side of things has come on a long way... Interesting to see how this does in the NLE market in a time where there is NO IDEAL SOLUTION for us editors anymore. Personally, I find that the technolgy is hindering the storytelling process more than ever.
The simplicity of Resolve 12 is very attractive.

Everything You Need to Know About DaVinci Resolve 12 The Blackmagic team must not sleep. They just released the first Public Beta for Davinci Resolve 12, which you can download here.
