Contractor appointed to carry out Aylestone School expansion

Morgan Sindall Construction’s Central team has been appointed by Herefordshire Council to carry out the building works to increase capacity at Aylestone School, Hereford. The project will see £13.6m invested in the school’s facilities to accommodate 300 additional pupils, equivalent to 60 additional pupils in each year group, with the first additional intake into Year 7 from September 2028. The permanent expansion was approved by Cabinet in February 2023 and aims to meet the growing demand for secondary school places in the north of Hereford city. The scheme will provide a new sports hall with changing facilities and a two-storey teaching block comprising of six classrooms, a music room and practice spaces, together with internal remodelling of existing facilities and associated external works. The plans also include a widened access route and a drop-off and pick-up area for vehicles.

The project is part of Herefordshire Council’s wider investment in education across the county, helping to ensure children and young people have access to modern, inclusive and high-quality education facilities that meet local need.

Councillor Harry Bramer, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Assets, said: “The appointment of Morgan Sindall is great news for education in Hereford. The expansion of Aylestone School will provide a safe, inspiring environment for more students to thrive.”
Councillor Ivan Powell, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, added: “I’m delighted that a contractor has now been appointed and that work to increase capacity at Aylestone School is moving forward. This project is part of the council’s commitment to delivering high-quality, inclusive education facilities that meet the needs of our children and young people.”

Simon Robertson, Headteacher of Aylestone School, said: “I’m pleased that the expansion project has taken a significant step forward and is moving towards work starting on our school site. We will be working closely with Morgan Sindall to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum while the construction work takes place. The new facilities will greatly enrich the learning environment for both current and future students. These spaces will not only support academic growth but also offer a wider range of opportunities for all who attend the school. We look forward to using the new facilities from the 2028 autumn term.”

Robert Williams, Area Director for Morgan Sindall in Central and Wales, said: “We’re over the moon to have be appointed to work on the expansion at Aylestone High School. Providing school spaces to Hereford’s growing community is a real priority for this project, and we can’t wait to deliver these exceptional facilities to students. FOOD FORTNIGHT

We have had a fantastic start to the school year in the food department.

Year 11 have kicked things off with some outstanding mini black forest cakes- Well done 11A.

On Wednesday 12th July, 11 of our year 10 mathematicians were given the amazing opportunity to visit the Aston University School of Mathematics.

The students spent the day learning about mathematics and different careers that mathematics can lead to.

They heard from the amazing Ayliean MacDonald, who is passionate about, mathematics, art and marine conservation

They also heard from Paige Pearson, an fantastically successful woman who works in AI and defence.

The students got an opportunity to work on some interesting mathematical problems, looking into group theory and finding out how it links to other subjects and learnt about how Pythagoras is used in calculating Spotify algorithms.

Speed networking - got a chance to speak to the maths mentors who were helping out all day, to find out what courses they were studying and what life was like. One student was telling us how he’d seen Tom Hiddleston outside his university in London.

We were kept hydrated and well fed throughout the day, with pizza and snacks on hand to help fuel our brains.

We have also been invited to take part in free Super 7 revision sessions in September which aim to focus our revision in preparation for the Year 11 mocks, don’t worry the Aylestone Mathematics Department will share this with the whole year group in September.

It has been so pleasing to be able to hand out our Special Achievement Awards to well deserving students in our Celebration Assemblies this week.

Many students have been recognised for consistently doing the right thing in and out of lessons, making positive contributions to the school community.

Well done to all.

🥾🌧️ Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Success! 🌧️🥾

This weekend, 15 of our Year 9 pupils successfully completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award qualifying expedition – and what an achievement it was!

Working in three independent teams, pupils navigated approximately 14 miles over two days through the Herefordshire countryside, travelling from Queenswood Country Park to Aylestone School, using only maps and compasses to find their way. Along the route they carried all of their own equipment, pitched their own tents, cooked their own evening meals and demonstrated fantastic teamwork, resilience and determination.

Despite some rain, spirits remained high throughout the expedition. The pupils were a credit to themselves, their families and our school, showing maturity, kindness, and perseverance every step of the way.

For those unfamiliar with the Duke of Edinburgh Award, it is a nationally recognised programme that helps young people develop confidence, independence, and teamwork through volunteering, learning new skills and expedition challenges.

We are incredibly proud of all 15 participants and hope their success inspires even more pupils to take part next year.

And the most important lesson learned from the weekend?

QUIZ NIGHT
