Most people do not realise that in the right circumstances, you can have ÂŁ18,570 tax free income

This only works when you have non-savings income below the personal allowance, and in addition, savings income on top.

It’s not a loophole. It’s just how the rules work when you understand how the allowances fit together.

⚠️ Not financial advice. Tax rules and allowances depend on individual circumstances and can change. If you’re unsure how this applies to you, it’s worth checking your position properly.

What happens to your pension when you die?

It’s a question I get asked a lot, and most people think they know the answer.

In reality, it depends entirely on the type of pension you’ve got, and there are a couple of areas where people get caught out.

Two big ones I see in practice:
– assuming a pension will just “go to the right person”
– not realising how tax can bite, especially later in life

Things like old nomination forms, changes in family circumstances, and upcoming tax changes can make a big difference to what actually happens, not what people expect to happen.

⚠️ Not financial advice. Tax rules depend on individual circumstances and can change.

Two million people are paying too much tax
and HMRC doesn't tell them.

There is an almost unknown tax allowance that can be claimed each year, but it is not well advertised (I wonder why!!), it is not worth a lot but it is your money if you qualify for it.

Limited company directors – are you paying too much tax?

If you’re taking surplus profits as dividends after your basic rate band is used up, the numbers can be eye opening.

The board in this video shows how the same company profits can end up in two very different places, depending on the route taken.

Most company directors I speak with don't know that about this smart way of protecting their family.

Life insurance sounds boring, and is often overlooked but if you stop for just a moment and think about your family's life without you (and your income!), you'll realise that it's important.

And, there is a really clever way of paying for this to slash the cost of premiums by up to half!

Instead of paying the premiums from your income that has already been hammered by tax, the business can pay.

Same cover. Same people protected. But paid straight out of the company, before tax, rather than from your own pocket.

Nice!

Most people do not care how a sausage is made. They just want the sausage.

As financial planners, we love to show our work. Cashflow models, complex tax stuff, colourful graphs. I cannot think of a single client who has ever started a meeting by asking to see them.

What people actually want to know is the answer to one simple question: will I be okay?

Everyone’s version of “okay” is different, but that is the question underneath everything. The money is just the tool. My job is to wrangle it and make it work.

And that is something I do well. I am a very good wrangler.

One of the biggest tragedies I see with clients is dying with far too much money. I just think about all the lost time and lost opportunity.

For many of them, they did live their best life. Spending more would not have improved their quality of life.

What they could have done instead is plan around tax while they were alive. Stop giving money to the tax man and give it to the people they love.

That is what gifting is really about.

What happens if you die without a will?

In this video, I explain how the people you love may get ziltch, zero, nothing whilst someone you may not even really know, or maybe not even life may get it all!
