The Cathedral Choirs sing for the morning and evening services each Sunday, and Evensong every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The earliest reference to choristers at St Davids Cathedral was in 1132. Thomas Tomkins was born in St Davids in 1572 and he became a chorister in the cathedral while his father was Organist and Master of the Choristers. s aged between between 8 and 18. The Vicars Choral (Lay Clerks) of the choir work locally in a variety of occupations, and since September 2008 three students have joined the choir as Choral Scholars to sing either during their ‘gap year’ or after graduation. The Cathedral Choir sings at four services every week, has been broadcast many times on BBC radio and television, and has recorded several CDs. The choir has toured widely, most recently to the Netherlands, Northern France, Germany, Bulgaria, Australia, the USA and Italy. The choir always plays a major part in the Cathedral Festival and has performed with the Kings Singers, Tenebrae, James Bowman, Florilegium, Charivari Agreable, The Corelli Orchestra and British Sinfonietta. It has commissioned and given the first performances of works by leading composers including Owain Park, Grayston Ives, Giles Swayne, Geraint Lewis, David Bednall, David Briggs, Francis Grier, Francis Jackson, Howard Goodall, Paul Edwards, Robert Walker and Paul Mealor.
