I studied Electrical Engineering for ONC followed by Electronics at HNC (equivalent to BSc) at colleges in Tunbridge Wells and Hastings, whilst being employed initially as a telephone engineer and latterly in a design and development role for an electronics company. I changed companies several times before joining a mid-Sussex company involved in frequency generating, where I remained until 1978. A short period in computer maintenance led to a customer service and finally an international marketing post with one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of test equipment. During my stay with them, I had the opportunity to travel the world, and visited most European countries, spending some time setting up a partnership business in Germany and developing strong ties with France and Italy. My journeys also included many of the old ‘Iron Curtain’ countries (often called the Soviet Bloc), the USA and Canada as well as the Far East, including several long-term stays in China and satellite visits to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. During my first visit to China, I was awarded my B.Eng (Honorary) by Sun Yat Sen University. Towards the end of the 1980’s, the company was ‘taken over’, and I was made redundant. Mrs Thatcher’s government was keen for out-of-work people to start up their own businesses, and I ran my own small test equipment and training agency which I had to close when the recession of the early 1990’s struck. I decided to try my hand at teaching and was appointed as a part-time lecturer at a West Sussex FE college as well as other evening schools and at a private college in Brighton. I remained at the FE college, acquiring an Assessor’s qualification and teaching Business Studies, Travel & Tourism and other travel and leisure programmes at Level 2 (GCSE) and Level 3 (A-level). Despite several successful years of teaching, redundancy once again set in, and I was fortunate to be employed by one of the most successful Sixth Form colleges in East Sussex. During almost 12 years in this establishment, I taught a range of subjects, including Leisure & Tourism, Travel & Tourism, Business Studies, ICT & Computing and Electronics. I was a long-term member of the pastoral team (Assistant Senior Tutor), developing and delivering pastoral programmes alongside the academic ones, and I was appointed Deputy Head of ICT. Regretfully this all ended when I reached the magic age of 65, and discovered that I could no longer be employed. I had been fortunate enough to study for my MA (Ed) and PGCE, granted in 2003. After retirement, I enrolled with two Supply Teaching agencies and have been employed more-or-less full-time ever since, including several long-term contracts with schools and colleges in both East and West Sussex as well as a large number of one-day or longer-term placements. Some of the longer-term placements have included A-level ICT at St Richards, Bexhill, and Downlands Community School in Hassocks. Business Studies at A-level and HND/HNC at Sussex Coast College in Hastings and Travel & Tourism at Central Sussex College in Haywards Heath. Other long-term contracts have included The Farlington School and Our Lady of Sion School (both independent schools), Thomas Bennett School, Sir Robert Woodard School, Hazelwick School, Lewes College, Brighton City College (Brighton MET) and Plumpton College to name a few,

I have been Moderator for A-level electronics for AQA since 2009 and was appointed Chief Moderator in April 2013 until Electronics A-level was subsumed into Physics in 2016.
