Opinions Are Like A***holes… 💩

Apologies for the long video, people — but this one was much needed. 😂

I’ll also put an explicit language warning here. I tried my best not to swear… but, well… it happens. 🤷‍♂️😂

Following some comments on a post from the good people at Dukeries Brewery Tap Live Music Venue video that they recorded at my gig with my band TopGun from Saturday night, which was helping me advertise my business the other day, I felt the need to publicly comment.

I’m not going to explain everything in the description — take the time to watch the video if you like. It’s nearly 10 minutes long, so I apologise in advance! 😂

And if you’ve got things to say, go for it. You’re absolutely entitled to your opinion. 👍

But there is far too much negativity in the world already, and there’s even more of it in the world of music and musicians.

Why make it worse? 🎸❤️

Opinions are like a**eholes — everybody’s got one.

But it doesn’t mean you have to share it. 😉

🎸 Guitar Strings, Corrosion & Subpar Packaging 🎸

Ron Reynolds brought this good point to my attention, and I remember Spencer Roe having this issue too, amongst many others — so here’s a video! 👇

As we know, guitar strings corrode. The elements, sweat, grease, skin from our fingertips… all of these things can have an adverse effect on our strings. 😬

We can either have a good string-cleaning regime to extend their life, or simply change them regularly. 🔄

But I do think certain brands have an issue with their packaging. I’ve opened packets of strings that have been sitting in reserve for a while, only to find the strings already showing signs of corrosion. 🤦‍♂️

Interestingly, I have NEVER had this issue with D’Addario strings — especially the NYXL and XS lines. 👌

I have absolutely no endorsement or affiliation with D’Addario. I’m just a humble, small-potatoes guitar teacher and covers band musician! 😂

But after years of playing, trying pretty much every string brand I can get my hands on, gigging regularly, and working in guitar shops, I’ve seen plenty of flaws — and plenty of virtues — in different brands, their strings and their packaging.

And for me, D’Addario have never failed. 🎸🔥

Phrasing on Guitar 🎸

Thanks to my student Dan for bringing this one up! 🙌

Phrasing is a tricky concept to get your head around, but my approach tends to revolve around targeting notes within the chords you're playing over as starting or finishing points.

🎯 Start with the root notes
🎯 Then move on to the 3rds
🎯 Then the 5ths

This gives your playing a sense of direction and helps your solos sound much more connected to the harmony rather than just running through scales. 🎶

Another great exercise is to sing what you play — either internally or out loud, however you choose! 🗣️🎸

If you can hear the phrase in your head before (or while) you play it, it can work absolute wonders for developing your phrasing, musicality and improvisation. 🔥

As you progress as a guitar player, you start to figure out your preferences when it comes to all the little things — strings, picks and those essential accessories.

And when you know what you like… it’s ALWAYS better to buy in bulk! 😎

🎸 Your preferred strings? Buy a 3-pack or even a box of 10!

🎸 Picks? You can get multi-packs of 12 — or, like I have here, a 72-pack! 😂

You can NEVER have too many picks or too many packs of strings! And having spares ready to go is ALWAYS a good idea. 👍

Find what works for you, stick with it, and stock up! 🤘

Hey guys! 👋
After a busy few months, my teaching timetable is now pretty much completely full! 🤘
I've got just a handful of HALF HOUR spaces and ONE fortnightly HOUR slot left, and these are literally the only regular lesson slots I currently have available.
So if you've been thinking about learning guitar, improving your playing, or getting back into playing after a break, now is the time to get in touch! 🎸🔥
I offer 1-to-1 lessons either in person or online via Microsoft Teams, so you can choose whichever works best for you. 💻🎸

Lessons are available in:

🎸 Bass
🎤 Singing

Whether you're a complete beginner, already playing and want to take things further, or you're looking to improve your technique, theory, improvisation or confidence, lessons are tailored specifically to you and what you want to achieve.

🎸 Make use of your influences... but don't lose who you are! 🎸

As guitar players, we all take inspiration from the music we love. We learn the riffs, steal the licks (you know what I mean! 😄), and admire the little things our heroes do that make them unique.

But the goal isn't to become a copy of someone else.

Take the ideas that inspire you, learn from them, and then use them to create your own voice. That's where the magic happens. ✨

I've always said I'd rather be the best version of myself than a second-rate version of Guthrie Govan or Paul Gilbert. 🎶

Your influences should shape you, not define you.

🧵🎸 String Comparison Experiment! 🎸🧵

As you guys know, outside of teaching my guitars are all tuned to Eb, so I tend to use strings that are a little on the heavier side.

After a few months of using standard 11-49s, I've come to the conclusion that I need to go back up a little on the lower strings... so I've decided to turn it into a little experiment! 👀

On two of my regular gigging guitars, I'll be fitting:
🎸 D'Addario NYXL 11-52
🎸 D'Addario XL 11-52

I'm going to keep track of:
📅 The date they go on
⏳ How long they last
🎵 How the tone changes over time
🤘 How the feel and elasticity change as they age
🛡️ How quickly they corrode and wear out

Both sets will get exactly the same pre- and post-gig care, so it'll be as fair a comparison as possible.

Sadly, D'Addario don't currently make an off-the-shelf set of XS coated strings in 11-52, otherwise they'd have been joining the test too!

Once both sets are finally worn out, I'll share all my thoughts and the results. It should be interesting to see if the extra cost of the NYXLs is really worth it! 🎸

What's your favourite guitar effect? 🎸

Now, I know some guitar players like to plug straight into their amp, crank it up, and let the amp do all the talking... and I wholeheartedly applaud that! 🤘

BUT...

We also love pedals. Let's be honest! 😁

So I want to know...

👉 What's your favourite guitar effect?

There are just 2 stipulations:

🎛️ 1. It has to be an effect added by a pedal or built into an amp. So we're talking overdrive, distortion, chorus, delay, flanger, phaser, tremolo, octave, wah, reverb, compressor... you get the idea!

🎸 2. If choosing just one is impossible, I'll allow up to 3 effects. They can be ranked or just three of your favourites.

Once I've had 10 answers, I'll reveal mine... 👀

I'm now officially an RGT Registered Guitar Tutor! 🥳
So... what does that actually mean?
Well... it means you can trust me... 😂😂
In all seriousness, it's a recognised professional registration that reflects my commitment to teaching guitar to a high standard.
I've been playing for 25 years and teaching in various guises for 20 years. I might be a bit of a troglodyte as a human being 🦴😂, but I do know my way around a guitar!
A huge thank you to all my students—past and present—for your continued support. It's genuinely appreciated. 🙌
