The North West Independent Film Festival seeks volunteer Screeners to watch short films submitted to the festival and provide feedback.

They're looking for talented film professionals interested in expanding their skills. Experience in watching short films is essential. A passion for British film and dedication to learning more about the art of film programming are also important qualities. They particularly welcome applications from people who identify with groups that are under-represented in the arts community.

The submissions screening process will take place online and be on an as-and-when basis, as the submissions come in. As a minimum, you will be assigned 20 short films and a brief written review will be expected for each. All films will be 15 minutes or less in length, including credits.

Screeners will have regular access to the Festival Director for guidance, and there will be one online meeting where the programming team will discuss the films they’ve watched.

This is a voluntary role.
Hours will be ad hoc to fit around individual needs.
All screeners will be given a complimentary festival pass to NWIFF 2025.

To learn more about the festival, please see the NWIFF website (https://nwiff.co.uk/)

Congrats to Tomás Felício Oliveira for
winning the Young Arrows’ Student Commercial of the Year award!!!!!

Tomás graduated with a Film BA Honours degree from Westminster earlier this year and directed the award-winning commercial as an extra-curricular activity whilst a student at the University.

The commercial was produced for the Cannes Future Lions competition in 2024 to conceive and advertise a new concept for the Spotify streaming app.

Dr Laura Stephenson, Course Leader for the Film BA Honours course, commented: "The final year of the Film BA Honours degree embeds advertising production within the curriculum, acknowledging the importance of short-form commercials in launching many long-form film careers. We are very pleased that Tomás has won this award which recognises his skills."

Last week the 1st years on the BA Film did a fun exercise as part of the Creativity & Collaboration module in which they were taught how to cut 16mm film and asked to make a short montage using ‘found footage’.

They all enjoyed it and found it an enriching experience. It's also a rare and unusual experience as Westminster is now one of very, very few undergraduate film degrees in the UK to offer hands-on experience with physical film.
