Doctors warn that food is responsible for over half of all fatal choking accidents, with grapes the third most common cause of death in food-related incidents.*

Whole grapes are a dangerous choking hazard for babies, toddlers and young children.

The size and shape of grapes means that they can completely plug a child’s airway. The tight seal produced by the grape’s smooth surface makes them difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques.

Young children are particularly vulnerable to choking on a grape because:

• They don’t have a full set of teeth and are still learning to chew properly.
• Their swallow reflex is still developing.
• Their airway is very small.

To cut grapes safely, cut in half lengthways and ideally into quarters. Do not simply cut in half widthways. Or buy a grape cutter gadget like the one in this video! 💚

Can you bring your baby to our Baby & Child First Aid classes?

Yes, absolutely!

Pre-crawling babies are very welcome to come along. If you need to feed, change or comfort your baby during the session, that is completely fine.

Once little ones are crawling or on the move, classes can become less suitable. We want you to feel relaxed, able to take in the information and join in with the practical activities without worrying about where your baby has wandered.

If you are unsure about the venue and whether it will work for your pram or pushchair, simply contact your local instructor. You will find their details at the bottom of the location webpage when you search using your postcode on the classes page of our website.

Our two-hour baby & child classes run all across the UK and cost from just £30/pp - see what's available in your area on our website.

Hands up if you or your little one is suffering from a runny nose and itchy eyes at the moment 🙋‍♀️

Hayfever season has well and truly kicked in, and it can feel pretty miserable for your little one if they are affected.

There’s currently no cure for hay fever and you cannot prevent it. But you can do things to ease your symptoms when the pollen count is high.

Here are the NHS’ top tips for surviving hayfever season:

🤧 put petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) around your nostrils to trap pollen

🤧 wear wraparound sunglasses, a mask or a wide-brimmed hat to stop pollen getting into your nose and eyes

🤧 shower and change your clothes after you have been outside to wash pollen off

🤧 keep windows and doors shut as much as possible

🤧 vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth

🤧 try to use a pollen filter in the air vents of your car, if you have one, and a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner

Chat to your GP or local pharmacy for advice on antihistamine for your little one.
