If your teen wants to improve from a grade 4 to a 7 in their GCSEs, that can feel impossible.
But getting 1% better today? That feels achievable.
And the truth is that the best progress tends not to come from giant leaps.
It comes from small, consistent steps โ the kind that don't feel like much in the moment, but change everything over time.
๐ ๐ญ% ๐ด๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป ๐บ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ ๐น๐ถ๐ธ๐ฒ:
โ
Making a study plan
โ
Doing some past paper questions independently
โ
Focusing more in class or asking a question when you normally wouldn't
โ
Going to extra revision sessions at school
โ
Putting more effort into homework
Over weeks and months, those small steps compound.
And as long as you have enough runway before your final exams, those small 1% improvements will add up to a big change in results.
They can absolutely be enough to move your teen from a grade 4 to a 7.

Now don't get me wrong - tutors are fantastic and absolutely do work.
However, if your teen is struggling in many, or all of their subjects, then there's probably something more fundamental that they need to fix.

โ
Bounce back when things get tough
Research shows a strong link between the strength of a teen's executive function skills and their performance in exams.
The problem? There often isn't much time to teach these skills in school.
So teens rely on "study hacks" that aren't very effective. Things like re-reading their textbook, rewriting notes, spending hours creating flashcards, or simply highlighting key terms.
And often as parents we can see that their strategies aren't working, so we try and solve these problems through multiple tutors.
The challenge is that this might not solve the core problem. But when we focus on how to learn, rather than what to learn, we can lift grades across the board.
Building executive function skills is a game-changer. If you'd like to learn the complete system that I've used with hundreds of teens to build their executive function skills and improve results by 1-3 grades across the board, you can download the full system for free by clicking this link โก

But in my experience as an academic coach, underneath both of those often lies something deeper โ lack of self-belief.
When a teen doesn't believe they can do well, it can feel safer not to try at all.
After all, why risk failure when you've already decided you're not going to win?
I can do this"
โจ "I can get 1% better each day"
โจ "My effort is paying off."
Everything changes.
Belief isn't soft or fluffy โ it's the foundation of progress.
It's what turns revision into results.
So look for the glimmers of progress in your teen.
Praise the wins - no matter how small.
And remember, what you appreciate, appreciates. ๐

๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ป๐ฎ๐ด๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ด?
If youโve found yourself saying things likeโฆ
โก๏ธโHowโs the studying going?โ
โก๏ธโDid you revise today?โ
โก๏ธโHave you started that homework yet?โ
Youโre not alone.
But sometimes, all that โhelpful promptingโ turns into eye-rolls, one-word answers or maybe even a barky reaction back (weโve all been there).
Hereโs a simple idea that was shared by one of the parents in my community that lots of others have found helpful:
๐ ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐ข๐ป๐ฒ-๐ง๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ง๐ฎ๐น๐ธ ๐ฅ๐๐น๐ฒ:
โ
Agree one set time each day to talk about revision
โ
Ideally let your teen choose the time (before dinner is often popular)
โ
Stick to 5โ15 minutes
โ
Outside that? No revision questions allowed
It sounds small, but it can make a big impact to the atmosphere at home.
Teens can feel more control because thereโs no more surprise revision chat.
Parents can feel calmer, because they know thereโs an agreed time to check-in.
And everyone gets their normal conversations back about everything and nothing, that are so important.
If you try this, Iโd love to hear how it goes.

When a teen is struggling in three or more subjects, this is often down to challenges with executive function rather than ability.
Executive function includes goal setting, planning, metacognition (learning how to learn), time management and perseverance - the skills that underpin all academic success.
Research consistently shows students with strong executive function significantly outperform their peers in exams.
This Wednesday, I'm sharing my proven 3-step system to build these crucial skills - the same approach that's helped my students improve their GCSE results by 1-3 grades across multiple subjects.
My Skills, Will, Belief Method tackles the three pillars of academic success:
Skills - the practical "how" of effective studying
Will - building genuine motivation that lasts
Belief - developing unshakeable self-confidence
I'll be sharing content directly from my paid programme, so expect a genuinely high-value session with actionable strategies you can implement immediately.
This workshop is for Year 11 GCSE students and their parents.

When teens are struggling in three or more GCSE subjects, in my experience it's always down to a problem in one of these three areas:
1๏ธโฃ โI donโt know how to studyโ
2๏ธโฃ โI'm not motivatedโ
3๏ธโฃ โEven when I try, I feel like I'll still failโ
Each one points to a different piece of the puzzleโskills, will, or belief. If youโre not sure which is holding your child back, join my next free workshop on 13 August at 6:30pm to find out exactly what to do next.
Exams are a game your teen can learn how to play.
They are capable of more than they think.

โI struggle with motivationโ is a quote I hear from teens probably more than any other.
So how is a quote that says โI will beats IQโ relevant if most teens are telling you there isnโt much โwillโ knocking about?
Itโs relevant because itโs true.
The first step to getting better exam results starts with the motivation to try.
We need to re-engage your son or daughter in their education.
Your teen needs to be able to answer these questions (genuinely and for themselves!). Why should I bother? Why should I pay attention in class? Why should I try when exams are months, if not years away?
I do this by asking students what their goals are by subject and by grade - not their parentโs or teacherโs goal but what do they want to achieve? Where do they want to go after GCSEs or A-levels? We try and project them into the future โ just a little bit.
And after 5 years of helping teens improve their grades, I can honestly say that there is not one student I have ever worked with, who doesnโt want to improve their results.
Everyone wants to get better.
They might not feel motivated in that moment, they might not feel confident that they can do it and they might not have a plan for how to do it, but all of these things can be learned.
If youโd like to learn more about how to support your teen do this, Iโd love you to join me on my free live workshop on Wednesday 16 October where I will share my exact system for how I help GCSE & A-Level students to improve their results by 1-3 grades across all subjects without stress, nagging or tutoring.
