For many children with SEND, predictability and familiarity can make a huge difference around water.
Using visual cues, simple instructions and consistent routines can help children feel calmer, more confident and better prepared during swimming lessons.
Even small things like following the same routine each week or using clear visual demonstrations can help create a more positive and supportive experience in the pool.

❌ “It’s too late for older children to learn to swim.”
✅ Children can learn to swim at almost any age, and we regularly see older children grow in confidence and ability once they’re in the right environment.
In fact, older children often progress quickly because they can better understand instructions, techniques and water safety skills.
The important thing is starting. Whether your child is 4, 8 or 12, learning to swim is a life skill that can benefit them for years to come.

Consistency really does make a difference when it comes to learning to swim.
Regular lessons help children build confidence, strengthen muscle memory, and feel more comfortable in the water week after week.
It’s completely normal for progress to come in little steps, but attending lessons consistently helps those skills develop much more naturally over time.

Every child’s swimming journey looks different… and every little win deserves celebrating!
For one swimmer, it might be putting their face in the water for the very first time.
For another, it could be swimming without armbands, jumping in independently, or earning a distance badge after weeks of hard work.
Those moments often represent huge leaps in confidence as well as tangible progress.
At Brightwater Swim School, we believe celebrating these milestones helps children build a positive relationship with swimming, boosts confidence in the pool, and keeps learning fun every step of the way.

Breathing technique is one of the most important skills in swimming.
Good breathing helps children stay relaxed, balanced and confident in the water, while also helping them swim more efficiently as they progress through different strokes.
That’s why swimming lessons often include lots of bubble blowing, face-in-the-water practice, and learning to turn the head correctly to breathe.

Did you know? Goggles can help swimmers feel more comfortable, but they aren’t essential for learning to swim. In fact, becoming confident with a little water on the face is an important part of building water confidence and safety skills.

Are you heading abroad this summer? ☀️
Holiday pools can be exciting for children, but unfamiliar surroundings, deeper water and distractions can quickly become risks if little ones aren’t closely supervised.
Swimming lessons help build confidence and important water safety skills, but nothing replaces active supervision from parents and carers around the pool.

A common kicking mistake we see in swimming lessons is bending the knees too much.
Big bicycle-style kicks might feel powerful, but relaxed, smooth kicks from the hips are what really help swimmers move efficiently through the water.
Smaller, controlled movements often lead to better balance, body position and confidence in the pool.

Water play is often where real swimming confidence begins.
From splashing and blowing bubbles to chasing toys and jumping in, playful moments in the water help children feel relaxed, curious, and more comfortable in the pool.
When children are enjoying themselves, they’re often learning without even realising it.
That’s why we recommend parents to encourage their children to play in the bath, and get to the pool between lessons where possible.
