Dysphagia and Safe Swallowing

Dysphagia is difficulty swallowing and can occur in people living with dementia. It can increase the risk of choking, aspiration, dehydration, and malnutrition.

Signs may include:
• Coughing or choking during meals
• Wet or gurgly voice after swallowing
• Food remaining in the mouth
• Difficulty chewing or swallowing
• Taking a long time to eat
• Weight loss or repeated chest infections
How Caregivers Can Help
• Keep the person awake and sitting upright during meals.
• Offer small bites and allow plenty of time to swallow.
• Minimize distractions and avoid rushing or forcing food.
• Follow professional recommendations about food and drink textures.
• Check the mouth for leftover food when appropriate.
• Seek assessment from a healthcare professional or speech and language therapist if swallowing problems are suspected.
