The truth is this: whether it’s an end-of-term task or a hugely competitive 7Plus, 10Plus 11Plus or independent school entrance exam, characterisation is hard to do convincingly, especially under timed conditions. Students can underestimate the level of difficulty and under-prepare by not completing enough practice papers that enable them to fine-tune the way they create characters, use dialogue, implication and ‘show not tell.’ Then there’s knowing enough of the numerous possible ‘character types’ for one of any possible fiction genres they might be asked to write in. Help is at hand! My illustrated ‘Eight Eerie Characters’ e-booklet allows students to choose any of the eight character pictures in the guide and aim to write a short description of them, using show not tell.’ I’ve even included sample examples for each of the eight characters, so there’s bound to be ideas, techniques and vocabulary to inspire them. Ideal for reluctant writers or all ages, particularly those suffering from ‘entrance exam ennui.’ Let’s keep them motivated and inspired.
