Little Wellies. Home Based Care & Education.

Quality child care and education in a nurturing home environment. I’m a mother of four (all grown up now) and I was once in your shoes! My pedagogy.

A little bit about me:

I have been an Ofsted registered childminder for seven years, graded 'Good' by Ofsted in 2016. I have over 20 years experience in the early years sector: nanny, play-worker, EY’s practitioner, nursery manager, deputy early years lead/teacher for a local sixth form and FE early years lecturer and assessor. I’ve used a variety of childcare provisions over the years, and for m

The summer holidays are now in full swing at Little Wellies!
A train ride and trip to Vauxhall City Farm, and Battersea Zoo. Den building, climbing trees, hopping bunnies and pizza in Bushy Park, followed by an afternoon of board games and watercolour.

Can you guess what the Lemurs favourite vegetable is?

I really do have the best families to work with.
A lovely surprise this morning, I didn’t realise there was such a thing as childminder appreciation week! 💕

One of the Little Wellies is really into dinosaurs and enjoyed dinosaur and foam play at the local toddler group, so I’ve set up something similar! 🦕 🦖

COVID-19 Recovery Childminders | Hempsalls

I’m half way through mentoring my first cluster of childminders, and the feedback is very positive.
This is a fabulous opportunity for childminders to get together, network and improve outcomes for the children.
Check it out 🔽 and Spread the word!

COVID-19 Recovery Childminders | Hempsalls The Department for Education (DfE) is offering a programme of support for childminders across England, from May 2023 until July 2024. The Childminder mentor programme is focused on supporting childminders to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the youngest and most disadvantaged children.

I do love a charity shop treasure.
A fab little basket that cost me £4 and can be used for a variety of activities!
Today it’s set up for a posting activity, and it will be great for loose part play! ’sinterest👍

…and your top toddler trouble is - TOOTHBRUSHING!

🦷There are 3 top reasons why toddlers battle toothbrushing:

1. Because it makes them feel completely out of control (imagine how you would feel if somebody brushed your teeth for you?)

2. Because it disrupts what they would rather be doing/something that is way more fun

3. Because there is something about the sensation of it they dislike.

The answer then is to come up with a solution that mixes up all three.

👨‍👧First is to encourage reluctant toddlers to brush their own teeth - or, allow them to brush your teeth while you brush theirs. Taking turns to brush for 10 seconds or so at a time.

🛁Second don’t aim for a specific tooth brushing time and think outside of the bathroom. Tooth brushing while in the bath often works well, as does tooth brushing while watching a favourite video clip or reading a book.

📺There are many great apps and videos that encourage tooth brushing that work really well (my top choices being the Bluey magic timer and HeyDugee tooth brushing song).

🦕You can also turn it into a game and pretend you’re hunting for dinosaur bones or hidden treasure in their mouth.

🪥Third, investigate different types of toothbrushes, chewable rubber ones are often more successful than regular toothbrushes for younger toddlers and older toddlers and preschoolers often love the novelty of electric toothbrushes too.

🍓Finally, swap out mint flavour toothpaste for fruit ones, or other alternatives. As a grown adult I still HATE mint flavoured toothpaste with a passion, it’s a very strong flavour and knowing that young children have more sensitive taste buds than us, it makes sense to avoid anything very strong flavoured (Punch and Judy make a great strawberry flavoured toothpaste - I have no affiliation with them, just an honest recommendation).

Do you have any top toddler toothbrushing tips?

“A twig!” says the swan, “This twig is the best! It’s the right kind of twig to weave into my nest.”

“I’m not a twig! Why can’t they see,
I’m stuck Man, I’m Stick Man, I’M STICK MAN, that’s me,
And I long to be back in the family tree.”

I really wish the government wouldn’t use the word FREE! Its never been FREE childcare, it’s always been subsidised childcare, where by the LA/government pay a portion of the cost to the provider.
With a huge shortage of nurseries, nursery staff and childminders post pandemic, this is going to need a hell of a lot of work to get infrastructure in place, which is why the 30 hours aren’t planned to roll out until 2025.

I hope this isn’t a huge carrot 🥕 dangling in front of parents to get votes 🤔

“This is green, the colour green, green, green green!
This is green, the colour green, green, green, green.
Do you know what colour this is? This is green!”

Planning in the moment (18months - 2.5 yrs), and following a child’s growing interests. Grabbing what’s to hand and meeting the learning needs through sensory play, song and PAINT!!! So much language, mark making, pre maths, creativity, social skills, exploration and fun! Took 15-20 mins to get it all together, with the help from a little welly.

We will be adding more treasures to our box of green delights as we discover them, allowing children to return to this as they wish. The green ‘theme’ runs loosely in the background at this age. I will be following their lead and extending learning opportunity further with open ended play. Naturally, we’ll be getting outside to explore natures colour pallet!
Let’s see where our green adventure takes us!💚🧤🐸🦖🐊🦜🌿🪴🍏🥦🫑🥑🥒🫒🥬🥝

Colour Monster hearts! ❤️💚💛💙.
Colour Monster is all muddled up- he doesn’t know if he’s feeling happy, sad, angry or calm!

A quick grab the bits and create it activity this afternoon for some much needed quiet time while the little ones snooze.
Lots of discussion on feelings and emotions.

Colour Monster is now feeling calm!
