I’m really excited (and slightly nervous!) to be taking part in Birmingham Open Studios for the first time this year.

My shared studio at The Art Yard will be open across both weekends, so you can come and have a look around, see where I work and meet some of the other artists based here.

There are 4 artist studios at The Art Yard, as well as a community exhibition, and we’ll have lots going on throughout the weekends.

A selection of our lovely Art Yard volunteers will also be working on their own artwork and exhibiting their pieces, which I think is such a lovely part of what makes The Art Yard feel like a real creative community. ❤️

There’ll also be artist demonstrations throughout both weekends, so you’ll be able to see some of us actually working and have a chat about what we do.

I’ve never opened my studio as part of an event like this before, so I’m really looking forward to it — and it would be lovely to see some familiar faces come through the door!

I don’t actually paint flowers.

Not really.

I’m interested in what flowers feel like.

The movement.
The colour.
The abundance.
The light.
The slightly wild, imperfect quality of them.

I don’t want to paint every petal or make everything perfectly recognisable.

I’m much more interested in what happens when the flowers start to dissolve into colour, shape and mark.

I love that point where something recognisable becomes more abstract — where you’re no longer looking at individual petals, but at the shapes, colours and energy of the whole thing.

I think that’s why I keep coming back to them.

Finally… here it is. 🌸

This one has been through quite a few changes before I finally decided it was finished.

I wanted to keep that feeling of flowers spilling out and moving across the canvas, but without painting every flower literally.

There are so many layers in this one — scraped back areas, loose marks, colour showing through and those little flashes of pink, turquoise and yellow that appeared along the way.

And now it’s finished, framed and ready to leave the studio.

I’m really enjoying seeing these paintings start to build into a collection, and this one feels like a good indication of where the new work is heading.

I’ve got five finished paintings now… I think it’s time to start working on some smaller pieces.

Look a little closer…

One of my favourite things about working with layers is all the little bits that happen underneath and between the bigger marks.

Some get covered completely.

Some just peek through.

And some end up being the part of the painting I love most.

These are a few details from the painting I was framing yesterday.

You really need to see some of this texture in person — photographs never quite capture it.

Which detail catches your eye first — 1, 2, 3 or 4?

We’re away camping again at the weekend so I’ll try to keep posting but it may be more sporadic. I think this has been the most consistent I’ve ever been with keeping you updated here.
