Our goal is to switch our cotton fibre from Better Cotton to regeneratively grown fibres sourced straight from farmers by 2026. This has the potential to reduce emissions from cotton growing by at least 80%.

We also want to support shifting the equivalent land used historically by House of Hackney for cotton to regeneratively farmed land by 2028.

The Anima Mundi collection takes its inspiration from the principles of Deep Ecology, a movement founded by Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess, who believed that,

“The well-being and flourishing of human and non-human life on Earth have value in themselves […] independent of the usefulness of the non-human world for human purposes.”

Something that we whole-heartledly agree with at House of Hackney.

With this collection, we honour the wonder of the natural world; a world in which we believe in acting in reciprocity with, rather than exploitation of. Our aim is to rekindle our connection to Nature and become re-enchanted with the magic that surrounds us.

Our intention at House of Hackney is to re-enchant you with the natural world by bringing the beauty of the outside in and by shining a light on the wonder that is all around us.

One of the most magical elements of Nature is the changing of her seasons, as she waxes and wanes and traverses the Wheel of the year. To honour this, throughout the year of Anima Mundi, we will be sharing our Almanac.

Traditionally, an almanac would be used by farmers and keepers of the land, and was a book that served as a calendar, detailing the rising and setting sun, changes in the tide and what to plant and forage. In our House, we’re all about tradition (with a twist) and our almanac will serve as a guide to the seasons and the cosmos, with full moons, signs, plants and a playlist, to help reconnect with the magic that surrounds us.

House of Hackney’s new collection Anima Mundi was born of the idea that the world is alive, and that we are a part of it. Meaning ‘soul of the world’ this year-long collection is an homage to the intrinsic connection between all living things.

We are starting to see the murmurs of a shift in worldview where Nature’s importance and sentience is being remembered again. With this collection we hope to rekindle our innate connection with the natural world; to see ourselves as part of the complex web of life; not separate from nor higher than Nature. After all, we are Nature.

OUR INITIATIVES | Every year we budget 1% of all of our sales based on forecasts for the year ahead to go towards strategic charity partnerships and impact projects to drive our regenerative mission.

In 2023, we donated over £100,000 to charity partners including World Land Trust, William Morris Gallery, Panthera, Hackney Winter Shelter, Choose Love, Rainbow Grow, Grow NYC, Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN), Paper & Cup, Furnishing Futures, Art Start and Housing Works.

Partnerships are selected strategically to support managing our impacts. As wallpaper makes up the majority of our sales by volume, deforestation and forest protection is a key focus of our work. We are proud to partner with World Land Trust and Canopy, leading NGOs working to protect the world’s forests, endangered habitats and their wildlife.

Our first New York space opened onto Elizabeth Street Garden. It is a part of our story, and a part of many others. We are deeply saddened that it is set to be torn down and destroyed.

New Yorkers including Patti Smith and Martin Scorcese are fighting in a last ditch attempt to save the little square of Nature that means so much to so many.

Please support ’s mission to protect and preserve the magic of the 200 year old garden and public community green space by making it a part of the Conservation Land Trust.
