Get ready for the day ahead with a clear and calm mind - in only one minute.
Before you even get out of bed, try following this simple breathing technique which is a great breathing tool that can be done anywhere to help with the feelings of anxiety.
Breath in for a count of 4 through the nose, and breath out for a count of 4 through your mouth. Breath in for a count of 4 breath, now breathe out for a count of 8. Continue this sequence for 60 seconds.
Here are some other key practices to include in your morning routine.
✔️ Resist the urge to immediately check your phone or emails.
✔️ Stretch for 5–10 minutes, or find a gentle yoga or mobility routine that can help discharge some of the nervous energy.
✔️ Aim for a good breakfast. Anxiety can worsen if your blood sugar drops. Have foods containing the following.
➡️ Protein (eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, protein smoothie)
➡️ Healthy fats (nuts, seeds, avocado)
➡️ Fibre-rich carbohydrates (berries, oats, wholegrain toast)
✔️ If you notice anxiety peaks after coffee, try eating before drinking coffee, or at least have a glass of water. Or try delaying caffeine by 60–90 minutes after waking to see if that helps.
However, if morning anxiety is happening most days for several weeks, is getting worse, or is interfering with work, relationships, or daily life, it's worth speaking with your GP.
