Huge shout-out to Elizabeth Ann Benson, our latest Vocal Habilitation Professional to qualify!.  A VHP is a singing teacher with superpowers, in fact, we didn’t have space to list them all on this post, but here are some of Elizabeth’s highlights.
Elizabeth holds a master of music degree from New England Conservatory, and a doctorate from The City University of New York Graduate Center. She is both a graduate of the NATS Intern Program (2016) and a recipient of the NATS Emerging Leader Award (2012). Her book,  Training Contemporary Commercial Singers is hailed as “a remarkable and long-awaited contribution to the world of voice pedagogy” (Journal of Singing). Her current research program examines issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in collegiate musical theatre programs and within the voice studio.

Happy Valentine's Day from everyone at VHE.

Did you know that singing can be good for your heart health?

Studies show that short durations of singing improve heart rate variability in patterns similar to that of high intensity exercise.Translation - this is a good thing for your overall cardiac health!!

Plus, what's not to love about expressing your affection in song form?

Just keep singing, your heart may thank you for it.

Critical Thinking, Ethics and Philosophy for Voice Practitioners. Book your space, link in Bio!
Join your community of like-minded voice professionals for this intensive weekend of discussion around how we interact with our clients to help them achieve their best. How do we protect and monitor our own selves within the teaching space? How do we maintain professional boundaries in the sometimes lonely world of 1:1 interaction as voice practitioners? The event is held in London and course tutors are Dr Jenevora Williams, Stephen King, Lily Goss, Sarah Carcillo MsC, Michael Loughlin. Students from last year’s course described the experience as a highlight of their year. We hope to see you there!

When recovering from a vocal injury or period of ill health that affects your voice, it’s easy to feel like there’s more wrong than there is right. The path to healing can look more like a mountain than smooth terrain with an end in sight. There will always be something that’s functioning, and within that lies the seed of improvement. You can heal, there is hope. Thanks to the incomparable for these beautiful words.

Vocal Health and Well-being has been a passion of mine. Not only as a professional vocal coach, but from my own personal vocal health journey.

During my studies and performing in London many moons ago, I suffered a vocal injury. I also pursued a career and vocal genre that did not connect or resonate with me. Through my own professional development, ‘unlayering the onion’ of self awareness, I have come to understand and accept this.
I am also Tongue Tied.
A lot going on physically, mentally, socially, with huge expectations on my young self. I received no support, counselling, rehabilitation, or guidance. I was basically told to take a year off and do something else. Crazy, however, we can only do the best we can with what we have and what we know. Hence my vocal health journey into Voice Care, Vocal Rehabilitation Speicalist Pathway through Vocal Health Education, working wholistically with voice users to optimal vocal health. 🙏

Im incredibly excited for Cairns Voice Care to be up and running with a fabulous multi-disciplinary network of humans to help and guide anyone who is concerned about their voice and vocal health.

Highly recommend this fabulous book ‘Help I’ve Got A Voice Problem’ written by Stephen King and .

I wish is had this guidance and resource to hand during my vocal training.

Wise words from Robert Sussuma, who is one of our talented trio in the Thinking Voice podcast. Robert is a voice and Feldenkreis practitioner and loves to help his students find the easiest version of everything they do. Sometimes, doing a bit less can translate into a little bit more.

Do you practice Feldenkreis and has it helped you in your practice as a singer or a teacher? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

New year MOT? Struggling with vocal stamina, range etc? Give me a shout. Voice care and vocal health boosts on offer with a 20% discount for January bookings. Vocal MOTs and ‘prehab’ (or rehab if coming back from injury)can be one-off sessions (no more than 3 are suggested) to pep up your vocal routines or ask questions that may be niggling…

Vocal MOTs don’t mean signing up for a new teacher! I work WITH your current vocal coach, not instead of, in just one to three sessions to fine-tune your vocal health routines and strategies.

This year I will be among the first cohort with Vocal Health Education to acquire a qualification in vocal rehabilitation for professional voice users. It’s something I’ve done for a long time but only now has there ever been a proper qualification in a previously unregulated field. I never work in isolation, but work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and have a top class team of mentors in the U.K. and U.S.A to refer to and share cases with. I am trained and qualified in manual therapy, and am a counselling-informed practitioner with clinical experience and observation hours in some of the top voice clinics in the U.K.

If you are a singer or speaker, this is your most important asset. Why not change the oil and check the brake pads once a year! Zoom or FaceTime sessions offered if you aren’t in the U.K. or Jersey. Otherwise, London, Oxford and Jersey in-person. [email protected]

"…this counselling course has been a game changer in so many ways for this pathway. I can see why it is compulsory module worth every single dollar and much more!
This is what makes VHE unique and special; We can all write papers and obtain a degree, however, doing the work, maintaining, and sustaining it is another! This is where VHE is integral to our profession.
The continual peer and mentor connection, discussion, observations and forums have been where I have learnt the most, and would love to continue."

Thanks to Keesha Mclean, vocal coach in Cairns, Australia, for this lovely testimonial. Keesha has completed Vocal Health First Aid, Vocal Habilitation Professional and is now one of our inaugural trainees on the VRS pathway (Vocal Rehabilitation Specialist).

At VHE we are all about reflection in practice and providing students with high quality mentoring and supervision. Here is the force of nature that is Nicki Kennedy. talking about her journey with us on both the VHP and now the VRS pathway.

"...since completing the VHP course and embarking on the VRS course, I feel that I have become a more complete practitioner. This is partly down to having more confidence in approaching some of the psychosocial aspects of the work, and partly because of the huge value of being observed and hearing specific feedback about my sessions with clients. This has further developed on the VRS course, and I now value mentoring and observation or discussion amongst colleagues higher than ever before."
