Where does the real change happen in your voice work?

That's the question opening the new season of the Transformational Voice Research Network this Tuesday, in a session called "Where's the transformational space?" We're sharing it because it's one worth asking. Is it a single moment in a lesson, a conversation, or somewhere you didn't expect?

The network is a free monthly online group for anyone working with voices: singing and spoken voice teachers, researchers, clinicians, vocal health practitioners, music therapists, choir leaders and performers.

It's run by Jenna Brown, mezzo-soprano, VHE Qualified Voice Rehabilitation Specialist and the voice behind Bristol Voice Care. Jenna is also one of the presenters of our Certificate in Teaching Inclusively, and regularly shares her knowledge with our VHE members.

That’s what our Vocal Health Education Members' Practitioner Café is for.

Join Gillian Ramm and Michael Mandalios on Tuesday 6th October at 11am (BST) for an informal, friendly hour to share ideas, ask questions and learn from one another. You might bring something specific to discuss, or simply come along with your curious mind and meet some fellow voice enthusiasts.

"Stay in your lane."

It's sensible advice for any voice practitioner. But does it have to mean you stop learning?

In this month's newsletter, our Operations Manager Sally Wood writes about joining Foundations in Voice Therapy with Lydia Hart and Tor Spence, in a room full of SLTs with years of clinical experience.

She's clear about where her role ends and when to refer on, but she doesn't want that to become a reason not to learn. Learning from other professions, noticing where approaches overlap and bringing that back into your own work is where the growth happens.

What assumptions do we bring to the clinic when someone comes to us with a change in their voice?

In a new episode of 'The Thinking Voice', Maurice, Dr Jenevora Williams and Stephen R. King explore the complexities of the 'Functional Neurological Voice Disorder (FNVD) diagnosis', including recent updates to the diagnostic category, positive signs, working with the person behind the diagnosis, and the nuances of interdisciplinary practice.

There can be a strong instinct in voice care to look for an explanation that can be identified and measured. This discussion considers where that instinct comes from, how our training can shape the way we approach a change in voice, and what it means for the person sitting in front of us.

There’s more to explore around FN(V)D too, with Stephen - Voice Care Centre, hosting a FN(V)D Seminar this Saturday, 26th September.

What if calming down isn’t always the answer before a performance?

In a recent episode of *The Thinking Voice*, Gillian Ramm and mezzo soprano and performance psychology coach Hannah Sandison explore performance psychology, nervous system regulation and the habits that can help singers prepare for performing.

💆 We’re often told that we need to calm our nerves before we go on stage. But what if there’s another way of looking at that adrenaline, and the difference between moving into a threat state and a challenge state?

Because that little bit of adrenaline isn’t necessarily the enemy. It might just be a case of helping the body understand what it’s there for.

What better way to spend a Sunday evening than talking about all things voice? 🗣️

Yesterday we welcomed Kerrie Obert for "An Audience With…", with members and guests joining us online for an evening full of ideas, questions and plenty of vocal exploration. Thank you to everyone who took part, and to Kerrie for sharing the evening with us.

We were also pleased to award Kerrie an Honorary Fellowship of Vocal Health Education, alongside Christina Shewell. Congratulations both ⭐

There’s a lot to be curious about when you’ve spent your career exploring the voice from so many different angles.

Tomorrow evening, Kerrie Obert joins us for "An Audience With... Kerrie Obert: Thoughts from the Last 30 Years", reflecting on the experiences, research and ideas that have shaped her work over the years.

From clinical practice and teaching to research into tongue movement, twang and vocal quality, Kerrie’s work brings together plenty of different threads. We’re looking forward to hearing how those threads have shaped her thinking, and what she’s still curious about now.

VHE members can join for free and have access to the recording for 30 days afterwards. Non-members are very welcome to join us live too, with tickets available for £10.
