The class resumed swimming today, and after an initial quick assessment by the instructors, they were away. What a great start to the children’s school day! The walk back involved some different tree seed spotting, observations about the crops that we could see and noting the turning of the leaves’ colours as Autumn appears.

Today’s Forest School experience was a first for the new reception, with School, and all of the children coped very well with the walk up to our site in the woods. On our way, the children were busy spotting seeds which we examined closely and then went on to name the trees they had come from. When we got back to school; each child planted a couple of seeds into pots. We shall be keeping a watch over these to see if we can nurture some new trees over the coming months.

I’m sure you don’t need a reminder of how hot the last few days have been, but I thought we’d share an insight into how Class 2 have been coping in the heat! As well as staying in the shade and drinking plenty of water, this afternoon the children were treated to a cooling foot bath(trays) and a refreshing ice pop!

Today at Forest School, the children spent time looking for signs of Spring. They observed the differences between their visits to the woods in the season of Autumn compared with the Springtime. Over the coming weeks, we shall be watching the development of tree buds in the woods, every child has selected their own special tree for this. We also took some twigs back to school and have put them in water in the classroom to see what difference (if any) the heat of the indoors will make to the buds and then we should be able to draw comparisons between them. We will also be keeping an eye on which types of trees burst into leaf first.

This term we have been learning all about castles. We have looked at Motte and Bailey castles, how these were changed to stone castle and life inside a castle. Today we looked at how a castle would defend itself and how people may attack a castle. We made our very own mini catapults out of lollipop sticks and rubber bands. We know they work well because we fired them at Mrs Boulton!

After waking up our musical spirits in the woods; the children worked in small groups creating their own individual musical performances. They had to decide on suitable ’instruments’ and how and where they would perform their finished compositions. What fabulous results! Some groups were purely instrumental whilst others had singers too; one of the groups created a lyrical adaptation of ’I’m Gonna Be’. A huge well done to every member of the class, it was so much fun.
