Last week, our Create Club adventurers stepped into the wonderfully imaginative world of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Through exploring this beloved classic, children dived into a story that celebrates curiosity, creativity, and playful thinking.
We started with a group discussion, encouraging children to share their ideas and experiences by asking open-ended questions like, “What card games do you play?” This sparked conversation, builds confidence in speaking, and helps children connect the story to their own lives.
Inspired by the Queen of Hearts’ playing card characters — loyal yet comical servants — the children designed their very own “playing card people” using collage techniques. This activity nurtured artistic development, encouraging experimentation with shape, colour, composition, and texture. As they transformed simple materials into imaginative characters, the children also developed visual storytelling skills, character design insights, and creative decision-making.
Next, we moved to a hands-on project inspired by the famous Mad Hatter’s tea party. Children created their own teacup and saucer using collage, exploring shaping, joining, and adding texture and depth. Working in 3D not only strengthens fine motor skills and spatial awareness but also allowed each child to express their individuality through decorative details.
By combining literature, discussion, and collage, this session thoughtfully supported both artistic skill and imaginative thinking. Children are encouraged to explore ideas freely, solve creative challenges, and take pride in their unique creations — all while engaging with one of the most playful and inventive stories in children’s literature.
