Mediation is a speedy form of dispute resolution, which aims to prevent the need for using more formal, costly methods of resolving an issues - such as bringing a case to a court or tribunal.

A workplace mediation process typically involves:

✨An explanation of the mediation process
✨Calls (before and after the mediation) to each individual
✨A facilitated conversation by the mediator between the individuals
✨Any relevant additional service requested, such as DISC, training or coaching
✨Confidentiality and impartiality throughout
✨Communication with the organisation before, during and after the mediation

📨Email: [email protected] to discuss your enquiry.

Mosaic Mediation provide a range of conflict resolution tools and services to flexibly address every unique situation, including mediation, coaching, neutral evaluations, DISC profiling, training, and advisory services.

It was a fascinating discussion on Monday, as 🌿Bloom Mediator Mentoring held our monthly mediator discussion group.

(A few topics came up that probably would be worth doing a full session on!)

🙌It's been going about 3 years now and I still love running this group with Alice Lampard and Marie Coombes.

👉Not only do we get to learn from each other's experiences across the mediation sectors, it also offers a respectful space for debating nuanced topics within mediation.

Looking forward to next month's meeting on 20th July 🙌.

🫢My daughter almost missed out on a summer job by not sending one email.

As exams finish up, the longest ☀️summer holiday of her life approaches, and so my eldest has been on the job hunt. 👉But, there was one place she hadn't approached... where she'd loved doing work experience.

My daughter was worried she had left it too long to email after an open-ended invitation to contact them for other work. 😎 After a little coaching, she did. And, surprise, surprise they offered her summer work on the spot!

🙄How often do we do this? 👉Talk ourselves out of sending a follow-up or a message to clear the air, or an apology... Because we - mostly inaccurately - predict the worst and imagine a negative reaction.

After a week of mediations and pre-mediation calls, I am evermore convinced that, sometimes, we just need to do [the thing], ✉️send the message, and be open to a positive outcome being possible 🤩.

What action are you holding back on?

Send me the sceptics and cynics 🙌

✨If you were to assume that those who take part in mediation are only the optimists in this world, you would be far from the reality.

👉In almost all of my cases, parties have a lot of doubt at the beginning. Why would they not?!

They may have been through a version of mediation that did them no good before. And, the whole process can seem entirely unknown.

There are subtle differences between a sceptic and a cynic too:

🧐Being sceptical is often about a lack of faith in assumptions and requires more information to trust.

.. So, I'm honest about my experience of mediation and the possibilities. I'm clear that I don't expect naivety, just a little openness at times. And, we look for tangible actions to follow the day.

🤨 Being cynical, on the other hand, implies a lack of faith in people, usually assuming that others are motivated purely by self-interest.

..So, I ensure my behaviour matches my words, so they can trust my character and guidance on the process, and I reiterate the principles of mediation regularly. Then, I ensure they don't miss the golden moments when the other party offers trust-building words or actions.

And, then, at the end of the process, I get lovely feedback (like I did this week) encouraging others to just give mediation a go 🙌🙌🙌

✨What do you want to focus on?

There are three main coaching options available with Mosaic Mediation:

1. Individuals may wish to become more confident and assertive communicators through Assertiveness Coaching.

2. Our Peaceful Leadership Coaching equips people managers or senior leaders with leadership skills, delivering feedback, and managing conflict.

3. Conflict coaching can be used to help an individual to proactively process a difficult personal or professional interaction or conflict situation. (Conflict coaching can also be a great addition to mediation - particularly when one or both parties experience anxiety or have mental health concerns.)

Mosaic Mediation works directly with individuals or to facilitate coaching within an organisation.

I'm signing off for the afternoon to go make bread 🍞 🤩

Years ago we had a bread maker, but it was an old machine that gave inconsistent results and meant we ended up giving it away after some time of not using it.

After making 👩‍🍳bread the manual, 'old-fashioned' way a few times recently, I am trying again. This time with a new machine that has great reviews and a new determination to make part of the routine.

Some people experience a form of 'mediation' and that may put them off trying again. But, know that future mediations may provide an entirely different experience 🤗.

👉The last couple of weeks have involved several mediations, both online and in-person, but there have been other elements that I love about my working life alongside these:
- preparation for CLA Mediation & Training Ltd's June open course starting next week 🙌
- 🤩 an always fascinating and valuable time at the HR Hub run by Alana Penkethman from Laceys Solicitors.
- training on the new SEND white paper within SEND mediation
- delivering a Q&A session on how mediation can be adapted and facilitated effectively for those with SEND needs
- facilitating ⛰️ The Altitude Experience's networking session for our clients
- discussions about upcoming mediation processes and ✨bespoke services to navigate unique workplace requirements
- Peaceful Leadership coaching - for those looking to lead effectively, assertively, and peacefully 🕊️

Happy Thursday!

Today, I'm in the beautiful city of Bath🌇 for an in-person workplace mediation between 2 colleagues.

I'm glad that I made the decision to drive up the night before, even though this organisation is not that far from me.

👉A traffic-free morning, with only a short walk to the venue, means one less thing to consider or navigate during the day 😁.

What are you up to today?

What is a DISC 'communication style'? 'DISC' is a method of psychometric profiling - similar to Insights or Myers Briggs (MBTI) - which enables individuals to increase self-awareness around their motivations, behaviour, communication style, strengths, and areas of focus for development, using a 'DISC report'.

✨DISC is an incredibly simple and effective tool for improving communication skills and understanding how to relate to those with different styles.

We work with individuals who want to learn more about themselves - whether within their coaching package or separately. We also work with organisations, to support individuals or whole teams with training, recruitment processes, or team workshops.

To mention a few consequences...

Not all conflict is bad or unhelpful, but when conflict is not handled effectively (or totally avoided), there can be significant consequences for an organisation, including:
🔸Increased absences and staff turnover
🔸Miscommunication and disharmony between teams
🔸Interrupted or lower productivity
🔸More grievances and disciplinaries
🔸Broken trust - with individuals, towards managers, or with the organisation

There are several options to support an organisation's unique situation flexibly.

Yes, mediation is one ☑️

There is also coaching ☑️, training ☑️, specialist guidance☑️, neutral evaluation ☑️, and meeting facilitation ☑️

Delay is often caused by not knowing what the next step should be for the best. One step that you can take to manage a difficult conversation effectively is to reach out to a specialist for a no-obligation conversation. This car sticker isn't actually for me.

But it is for one of my children💖.

I talk a lot about perception and perspective as a mediator. 👉My youngest being born with a physical disability that meant she has had a wheelchair since the age of 3 had the greatest impact on how I see the world.

It changed how I looked at gravel driveways, steps to shops, narrow car parking spaces, tiny accessible toilets, narrow doorways and heavy doors... to name a few. 🛝Even grassy fields and play parks had negative connotations for me at one point, until we found a wheelchair that made them more accessible!

(🤨Don't even get me started on the logic of only providing pedal bins in disabled toilets!)

This experience is not unique to my family.👉 So many will be supporting children or elderly relatives, or will be impacted directly.

🙌Thankfully, much has been done - even in the years since my now-teenage daughter came into the world - to make the world more accessible. 🤩But it would be wonderful to see this continue to increase, as it is often also beneficial for those without mobility or accessibility concerns anyway!

And this is not a pity post, by the way, as I'm glad to say that my clever and very funny child is 😄wonderfully and openly content with her life. But yesterday was 'Global Accessibility Day', so I want to acknowledge it and highlight what helps.

✅These elements make such a difference (from my limited experience as a parent of someone with a physical disability):
- accessible toilets that give space for both the wheelchair user and a helper
- level surfaces wherever possible - dragging a wheelchair backwards over stones/bumpy grass is less fun than it looks
- ramps that can easily be put in place to give access to shops or public buildings
- kind people who ask if they can help with doors, reaching items, etc.

✨ However, the most revealing activity to increase anyone's understanding of life using a wheelchair... 👩‍🦽Have a go at doing a regular daily activity from a wheelchair if you get the chance! (It's amazing what you assume will be harder/easier compared to the reality of the experience!)
