🕵️ Mini Investigators: The Pineholt Museum Heist

This week, the children stepped into the role of investigators to solve a museum break-in.

A set of jewels had been stolen, a safe had been forced open, and a chalice had been left behind. Using a range of forensic techniques, the children worked methodically through the evidence to identify the culprit.

They:
– decoded a hidden Morse code message
– analysed ink to uncover altered identification
– examined fingerprints to identify who had handled key evidence
– and built DNA models to understand how scientists confirm identity

It was fantastic to see the level of focus, discussion and reasoning throughout the session. The children really took ownership of the investigation, carefully eliminating suspects and justifying their conclusions using evidence.

The final reveal was very well earned.

Two completely different science experiences this Easter. Both hands-on. Both memorable.

The Evidence Lab – children step into the role of a forensic scientist, building DNA, lifting fingerprints, and analysing real evidence.

Shark Science Experience – fast-paced, practical activities exploring how sharks hunt, move, and survive.

No worksheets. No sitting still for long. Just real science they can get stuck into.

Ages 7–11 - Drop off sessions so age is a guide.

I didn’t start Mini Investigators to run more “lessons”.

I started it because children are naturally curious — and that curiosity deserves space.

A space where they can ask questions, test ideas, get things wrong, try again and actually enjoy working things out.

It’s not about following the curriculum, but it supports it — building interest, confidence and opening their eyes to what science can be.

It’s also about making sure every child feels comfortable enough to get involved, whether they’re quiet, confident, or somewhere in between.

Mini Investigators is running in a few days and sessions are nearly full.

Carnivore or herbivore… what do the teeth tell us?

Animals’ teeth reveal a lot about what they eat.
Sharp, pointed teeth are designed for tearing meat, while flatter teeth are perfect for grinding plants.

Look at the animals you already know:

A lion or dog has sharp teeth for tearing.
A horse or cow has wide, flat teeth for chewing plants.

In Mini Investigators we explore science clues like this through observation, discussion and hands-on activities. It helps children start thinking like scientists.

Did you know every fingerprint is unique?

The tiny lines on our fingers are called friction ridges. These ridges form patterns such as loops, whorls and arches, and they help us grip objects without dropping them.

What makes them even more fascinating is that no two people have the same fingerprints. Even identical twins, who share the same DNA, have completely different fingerprint patterns.

This is why fingerprints have been used in forensic science for over a century to help identify people and solve crimes.

Children are often fascinated when they learn that the patterns on their own fingers are something completely unique to them.

If your child would enjoy exploring this kind of science, they can try it for themselves in our Mini Investigators Evidence Lab, where we will be lifting and analysing fingerprints just like real forensic investigators.
