Year 4 11+ Foundations – Tuesday 4pm
A new group of Year 4 children will be starting in my Tuesday 4pm 11+ Foundations sessions next week, with the group beginning from the start.

The sessions are designed for children who are starting their 11+ preparation and want to build strong foundations in English, maths, reasoning, vocabulary and problem solving.

There are two sessions before half term so this is a good opportunity to join before the next half-term block begins.

Sessions are online and kept small, with plenty of opportunities for children to participate, explain their thinking and receive support where needed.

Making Sense of the New FSCE 11+

If your child is in Year 3, 4 or 5 and you’re trying to understand the new Gloucestershire grammar school entrance test, I’m running a free online session for parents on Tuesday 27th October at 7pm.

I’ll talk through the new FSCE, including the English and maths assessments, the wider curriculum element and some practical tips for preparation.

There will also be time for questions.

The session is open to all parents, not just current tuition families.

October Half-Term Online Groups – Years 4 & 5

I’ll be running a selection of small-group online sessions during October half-term, focusing on key English and maths skills alongside reasoning, problem-solving and critical thinking.

Monday 26 October
• Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum – 11:00am–12:15pm
• Addition & Subtraction: Problem Solving & Reasoning – 1:00–2:15pm

Tuesday 27 October
• Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum – 11:00am–12:15pm
• Multiplication & Division: Problem Solving & Reasoning – 1:00–2:15pm
• Grammar, Punctuation & Sentence Skills – 3:00–4:15pm

The Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum sessions are particularly relevant to the wider curriculum element of the new Gloucestershire FSCE, developing skills such as interpreting information, reasoning, comparing, making inferences and explaining ideas. The two sessions will use different activities and curriculum contexts, so children are welcome to attend either one or both.

The English and maths sessions are also useful for 11+ preparation, with opportunities to apply knowledge through reasoning and problem-solving.

Sessions are designed around Year 4 and Year 5 curriculum skills, with activities and challenge adapted to the children attending.

A little look at what we’ve been working on in my online 11+ groups!

Over the last couple of weeks, the children have been busy developing their English and maths skills through a mixture of written calculations, problem solving and reasoning, reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar.

The groups are kept small, giving children plenty of opportunities to contribute, share their thinking and work through questions together.

We’ve had some great discussions already, particularly when explaining our reasoning and using evidence from a text.

Spaces available in my Year 4 11+ Foundations group!

My Tuesday online group is designed for children in Year 4 who are considering the FSCE 11+ and would benefit from building strong foundations before more focused preparation in Year 5.

Sessions focus on maths and English, alongside comprehension, vocabulary, reasoning, problem solving and critical thinking, helping to build skills that will support children across the new FSCE papers.

The group is currently very small, giving children plenty of opportunity to participate and receive individual support.

Tuesdays, 4:00–5:00pm | £20 per session

An important update for families preparing for the new Gloucestershire FSCE 11+ assessment for 2028 entry.

About the FSCE Entrance Test for Year 7 Entry
🆕 The Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test for entry into Year 7 in September 2028 will take place on Saturday 3rd July 2027. If your child is currently in Year 5 and wishes to apply for a place at a Gloucestershire Grammar School, they must take this test.

Registration will open on Monday 8th February 2027 (12 noon) and close on Friday 19th March 2027 (12 noon).

Following the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools announcement earlier this year the test provider will be Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE). The admissions test will consist of three FSCE papers:
🔹Adventure Paper: English and Maths, with Multiple Choice Answer options;
🔹Beacon Paper: English and Maths, where you respond with Short Written Answers;
🔹Compass Paper: any of the following subjects you learn at school: Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, English, Geography, History, Languages, Maths, Music, Physical Education, Science, with Multiple Choice Answer options.

These are small, interactive groups designed to build strong foundations in English and maths, with a focus on comprehension, vocabulary, reasoning and problem solving.

📚 Year 4 11+ Foundations
Tuesdays, 4:00–5:00pm | £20 per session

📚 Year 5 11+ Preparation
Tuesdays, 5:15–6:30pm | £22 per session

Sessions take place online through Pencil Spaces and are suitable for children preparing for the new FSCE format, as well as those looking to strengthen their 11+ skills.

A short initial assessment is provided before joining so that I can plan sessions around the children attending.

When should 11+ preparation start?

There isn’t one perfect starting point but for most children I’d think about it in two stages.

Year 4 is a good time to build the foundations: strong English and maths skills, vocabulary, comprehension, reasoning and problem solving.

By Year 5, preparation can become more structured and targeted, with children developing the skills needed for their entrance test while continuing to strengthen core English and maths.

Starting earlier doesn’t need to mean lots of extra work. Steady preparation over time is usually more helpful than trying to cram everything into a short period.

I run small online 11+ groups for Year 4 and Year 5, with the Year 5 group designed around the new FSCE format.
