Few things I would like to stress about my decision to teach Ear Wax removal.

There’s still a lot of confusion (and stigma) around who can safely carry out ear wax removal.

Let’s clear something up 👇

You do not have to be a nurse to be highly skilled, competent and safe in microsuction and irrigation.

Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) often have:
✔️ Years of hands-on clinical experience
✔️ Infection control training
✔️ Safeguarding knowledge
✔️ Patient care experience
✔️ Practical procedural skills

When properly trained, assessed and insured, an HCA can absolutely be competent in ear wax removal.

Now — I also agree that because ear wax removal isn’t heavily regulated, there are places offering training or treatment without the correct depth of knowledge, anatomy understanding or clinical skill base. That’s a reality.

But that shouldn’t stop someone from progressing, learning a new skill, or expanding their scope safely.

The key is this:

It’s not about job title.
It’s about:
• Proper anatomy knowledge
• Recognising contraindications & red flags
• Safe technique
• Hands-on supervised training
• Knowing when to refer
• Ongoing development

Choosing the right person to train with is crucial — regardless of their professional title. It should always be based on real clinical experience, hands-on skill, and depth of knowledge.

Competence > Job title. Always.

Patient safety and standards come first — and that’s what truly matters.
