Y-Hull design set to change small ferry safety

Glasgow’s EcoNavis Solutions and Singapore’s ShipDyn Ltd. are teaming up to bring the patented Y-Hull form to market. By combining twin forward demi-hulls with a single monohull aft, this design delivers the stability and deck space of a catamaran with the simplicity and efficiency of a monohull.

“The idea came from a real-life safety concern,” said ShipDyn founder Amitavo C Wye. “But what we have found is the Y-Hull delivers much more: fuel savings, more environmental benefits and more comfortable seakeeping. This makes it relevant for operators facing today’s performance and sustainability challenges.” A 13 m prototype in is already showing a 25 percent fuel saving compared with a monohull of the same size.
Dr Batuhan Aktas, founder and CEO of EcoNavis, adds, “When I first saw the Y-Hull, I recognised its potential for applications like crew transfer vessels, which are critical to offshore wind but consume significant amounts of fuel. By optimising the design, we can create vessels that are more efficient, more comfortable, and more in line with a ship operator’s sustainability and net-zero goals.”

Having secured first-stage approval for UK Government Transport Research and Innovation Grant funding, EcoNavis and ShipDyn are now refining the hull through CFD, simulation and towing-tank tests. With retrofit potential and markets from offshore wind to leisure ferries in confined waterways, the Y-Hull could soon be a familiar sight around the world’s shores.
