---MOUSSA KOUYATE---

Master Kora Player and self-proclaimed Problem Maker, Moussa brings both the bitter and the sweet in his tenacious approach to both life and music. Born in 1956 into the oldest of the five griot (Jaly) families of the Mandika culture, Moussa inherited the music, histories and wisdom of the 72 generations of his Kouyate ancestors. Many of his ancestors served as advisors to the Kings of Mali, among them Mansa Musa at the time thought to be the richist man in the world. Moussa began fusing his traditional roots with modern genres in Dakar in the 1970s, performing with the likes of Baaba Mal and Yussein Dour. Moussa spent time living in Spain embracing flamenco influences before moving to England. Based in the South west of England Moussa released Kora Blues in collaboration with blues guitarist Kevin Brown. Moussa is currently working on the Bristol Griot Album in collaboration with the Bristol European Jazz Ensemble and Emmy Broughton on concert Harp.
