As the exams are approaching one of the hardest things is working out what to study. It can be very tempting to redo styles of questions that we like and miss the ones we don’t. If you use my website to ‘create your own study plan’, you do my big diagnostic test without notes. You can then mark it and use the mapping grid to find out exactly which sections of my course you need to work through to bring you up to 100% understanding. As we near the final exams, it’s really important to make sure you have access to all the right material. I don’t like shortcuts. I want young people to study independently and create habits that will see them through college or university studies.

The material out there can be overwhelming and what should they use?

I have been a teaching maths for over 20 years and have pre recorded mini lessons for ALL content in Level 4 (S1-3), National 5 and Higher Maths. This material can be used instead of or in conjunction with a tutor.

If you know what topics you need to work on then dive straight in but if you want some guidance then complete my Nat 5 or Higher Check up to Create a unique study plan that can be worked on over the next few months.

Level 4 is always free (my stuff is already available through GLOW in Scottish schools and so is free on my website too) and Nat 5 and Higher cost £15 per month. You can try it free for a month with the imaginative code '1monthfree' and cancel whenever you like.

I’m aware that prelim results are out and people are starting to look for tutors. Here are some of my thoughts:

• I would strongly recommend that you choose a tutor who is or was a Maths Teacher and is super familiar with the Scottish curriculum. It's one thing to be able to 'do' maths and another to explain it to someone who is perhaps struggling. You want someone who knows common pitfalls and has tried and tested methods to simplify processes.

• A good tutor for an hour or so a week can be great but often you need more time than that to really improve.

If you or your child is studying maths this year then this resource could be the very thing you need. As an experienced maths teacher I’ve pre recorded the entire maths school curriculum from P7 to Higher and broken it all down into little videos with matching practise exercises. For example, if you’re working on the topic of vectors at school you can click on my vectors button and try all the exercises, watching the videos as and when you need to. It’s like doing the course twice and will really help fill any gaps and mean that you don’t need to revise as much nearer the exam as you’ll just be reminding yourself about stuff that you already understood.

I have great feedback from people who use the material and it can be used in conjunction with a tutor or instead of one and also works for home education as I’ve gone to every corner of every course.
