Tonight, I sat down with my music folder for the first time in a while.
(To be clear, I have held practices for other bands and players over zoom throughout lockdown, but I am honestly unsure about when I last picked up my sticks to play for and by myself.)

I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel strange, but it was nice to play without any pressure. It made me consider the benefits to having time away from practicing and allowing yourself to miss it.

Maybe this will be the start of my return to more regular practice, or maybe it will be a while until it happens again. This is a strange time. It’s ok to not want to practice right now, and it’s ok to want to practice.

I wanted to post my thoughts both to open the conversation, and also as a reminder to myself that there is no pressure. If practice is keeping you sane right now, that’s amazing! But it’s always ok to take a break.

REMINDER FOR ALL TENOR DRUMMERS: your stick needs to be close to your hand to catch it every time!

As a general rule, try tightening your strings to almost 90 degree angle to the hand for the most control over the stick!

Our first tenor judge is Peter Carter.

A few words from Peter himself about his background in pipe bands

ā€œI started learning the Tenor Drum at the age of 9, at Kirkcaldy RBL Pipe Band. My tutor and mentor was my father Bill Carter.
During my fun packed 40+ years playing the Tenor Drum, I was a member of Bowhill & Seafield Colliery, Dysart & Dundonald (Grade 1), Scotrail Vale of Atholl, Turriff & District and latterly Buchan Peterson Pipe Bands.
I was very fortunate to experience many successes, winning the Scottish, British, European, Worlds, Cowal Pipe Band Championships on numerous occasions, in both Grades 1 & 2 , this included winning the Scottish, Cowal and World Drumming Championship 2 times in Grade 1. Winning all Grade 2 Major Drumming Championships to include another 2 World championships. Numerous Best Bass Section triumphs.
Also had so much fun playing in the 2009 Champion Of Champions prize winning Turriff Drum Corps winning the European Drumming Championships in the same season.

Now retired from competitive playing, my focus is on player and youth development, participating in RSPBA Workshops. Have been in involved in solo tenor drumming adjudication for a number of years.ā€

A huge thanks from us to Peter for agreeing to judge our competition.

Looking forward to judging as part of the Shotts and Dykehead Solo Online Championship!

ADJUDICATOR ANNOUNCEMENT - Lauren Thomson

We are delighted to announce that Lauren Thomson will be adjudicating the Shotts and Dykehead Solo Online Championship 2020.

Lauren is originally from Edinburgh and began drumming at the age of 10 at local band, Penicuik and District, under the direction of LD William Black. Lauren received some tuition from then-Boghall Fiona Morris, followed by ex-Boghall Alan Jordan at the Pryde of East Lothian Pipes and Drums. Lauren joined Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia in 2014, where she competed for two seasons with the Juvenile band, followed by two in Grade 1. She then joined Shotts and Dykehead for the 2018 season, where she has recently been appointed as the head of the tenor section.

Lauren also played and performed with the NYPBoS Senior band between 2014 and 2016 and tutored at a number of outreach programmes with the band.

As a solo player, Lauren has won the International Solo Tenor Drumming Championship on two occasions. In 2019, Lauren started LT Tenor Drumming for tuition and composition services, through which she teaches both band bass sections and individual players.

LT Tenor Drumming

Hi, my name is Lauren and I am a tenor drummer for Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band.

I have played in pipe bands since 2008, starting at the age of 10, and have worked my way up from Grade 4/Juvenile to Grade 1. The 2019 season was my 11th pipe band competition season and my 2nd with Shotts. Prior to this, I played with People’s Ford Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band from 2014 to 2017. I am also a previous member of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland (NYPBoS) Senior band.

I am extremely grateful to have received high levels of tuition when beginning my pipe band career. I aim to provide first-class tuition in both visual and rhythmical aspects of tenor drumming. Over the last 5 years, I have tutored a number of bands and provided 1-to-1 tuition. I have also been involved in private tuition and composition of solo competition sets.

I look forward to being involved in new projects and spreading the love for tenor drumming further! Please send any enquiries via messenger or email.
