How did Saul become Israel’s first king? He looked the part. Israel had asked for a king like the other nations, so they got one. On the outside, Saul had everything. But inside, he was lacking. And very quickly, that gap starts to show. Because what people look for in a leader isn’t always what actually matters.

In the Bible, first words often tell us a lot about the person's character.

Jacob sounds deceptive.
David sounds complex: faithful, but ambitious.
And Saul: hesitant; he’s ready to give up and go home.
