Too often, we become the answer key in mathematics. We tell pupils what to notice before they've had chance to wonder.

In the image, what do you notice? Pupils might spot multiples, factors, primes, square numbers or patterns. The threshold is low, but the ceiling is high.

This isn't discovery without knowledge. Foundational knowledge makes noticing possible. The power comes from teacher subject knowledge: knowing which questions deepen thinking, refine observations and reveal connections.

More: "What can we make sense of together?"

Authenticity in maths matters.

Many educators in the UK will recognise Chen.

Alongside him came questions wrapped in elaborate contexts that often felt anything but real. Children weren't solving mathematics; they were decoding stories.

The recent Maths Horizons discussions and the Curriculum and Assessment Review raise an important challenge: pupils deserve meaningful mathematical experiences. However, 'authentic' questions alone won't fix this.

Authenticity isn't replacing a textbook page with a glossy PowerPoint about shopping. It's building a curriculum where mathematics helps pupils interpret, question and navigate the world around them.

Collecting and analysing data that matters to them. Comparing value. Planning journeys. Exploring fairness and risk. Not as occasional "wow" lessons, but as carefully sequenced opportunities woven through the curriculum or worse, something only higher attaining pupils get to in lessons.

The goal here isn't to make every question look real. It's to ensure mathematics becomes useful, purposeful and connected to life beyond the classroom.

More: "Why does this mathematics matter?"

That's the authenticity our pupils deserve. 🐝
