Secure knowledge builds on secure knowledge.

New learning depends on what pupils already know. We must meet pupils at their stage of understanding, not simply their age, building from small, secure components towards increasingly connected knowledge.

The quality of practice that matters. Carefully chosen tasks help pupils notice patterns, make connections, retrieve prior learning and apply concepts in different ways. This is how practice deepens understanding, rather than simply rehearsing procedures.

Consider rounding to the nearest hundred. Pupils need a secure understanding of the number system. They can practise estimating where numbers belong on a number line, identifying the previous and next multiples of 100 and discussing which multiple a number is closer to. This practice builds the number sense that makes rounding meaningful. The procedure becomes an expression of understanding, rather than a rule to memorise.

This is where strong subject knowledge and curriculum understanding matter. Teachers need to recognise the component knowledge pupils require, how it connects to new learning, and which tasks will help them build those connections securely.
