Report from government’s skills experts: UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) reveals that the number of 16 and 17 year olds combining part-time work with their studies has halved – from just over a two-fifths (42%) in 1996 to only 18% in 2014. Local labour market conditions are also discouraging young people from seeking part-time work while studying.

Report shows that young people feel that the competition for jobs, combined with a lack of flexibility from employers (on hours/type of contract) are putting them off even considering looking for Saturday

Young people are shunning Saturday jobs – opting instead to ‘play it safe’ by focussing purely on their studies, rather than enhancing their learning with part-time work.

Only 61% of small and medium sized businesses have a website and just over half of these are selling their goods or services on-line (BIS, Small Business Survey (2012)). The annual turnover of UK SMEs could be boosted by £18.8 billion per year if they all sold and marketed online. Website sales in 2012 amounted to £164 billion, up from £92 billion in 2008 (ONS, Monitoring e-Commerce, 2014 . (Only captures value of website sales from firms with at least 10 employees))
