What a wonderful third week at Little Bridges! It was lovely to see familiar and new faces, with children playing, exploring and building friendships, while parents and carers connected with others who understand the journey of raising a child with additional needs.

One parent shared:

“I really felt my child belonged... being in a mainstream nursery it unfortunately isn't always set up for him, and also for me to be around other parents in the same boat was lovely.”

This is exactly what Little Bridges is all about: creating a welcoming place where children feel included and families can connect.

Early Years: written by the children. Perhaps!

Remember your first days of school? Everything is different. Everything is new. Everything is exciting. Some of us know what it's all about (it's not our first year) and we are leading the way. Others, the newbies, are having a whale of a time exploring our new classroom and outdoor space. We're told that Early Years is such an important part of schooling. We learn to be with new people, in a new environment and with something called rules! There are three, we're told: be safe, be brave and be kind. These rules might be something that follows us all the way through. Yuck!

We love our new environment. There is so much to explore, from the toys that our friends have and we want to gooey, crunchy messy play. The adults love clearing that up after we're finished, and occasionally before we're finished. We've heard them ask questions like, 'how did the custard get in your hair?'

As we go through the year, I know that we are going to be learning so much. Our adults call them 'fundamentals' but we're just happy to have a blast.

Alongside their friends from Next Steps, Sharman Class have been busy running a weekly tuck shop for the rest of the school. Every Wednesday, they welcome students into the classroom, where they can browse a range of tasty snacks and refreshing drinks to ‘buy’. The tuck shop is always a popular event and gives our students a fantastic opportunity to develop their communication, money-handling and customer service skills.

MacArthur Class have been enjoying exploring plants, rocks and fossils during their Understanding the World sessions. They have been collecting and examining leaves from around the playground, investigating a variety of herbs using their senses, and creating their own fossils with salt dough and dinosaurs.

Next Steps have been accessing the wider community this week.
They have been learning volleyball skills at David Lloyd whilst developing our fitness.
A small group also visited a local pharmacy to look at where they can buy products to help keep their bodies clean and healthy. Some pupils enjoyed looking at beauty products too!

Earhart have been enjoying exploring living well week, particularly focused activities around looking after the world around us. Some have really enjoyed lots of bubble exploration and using communication boards to comment on how bubbles look, move and float. The pupils enjoyed regulation activities that helped them feel calm and secure as they navigate routines.
There have been lots of smiles, opportunities for curiosity and sensory play!

Welcome back!

As part of our Living Well Focus Week, Backshall class children have engaged in a range of play-based activities, aimed at building positive relationships with their peers, exploring calming sensory integration activities, and developing their understanding of the Zones of Regulation through Attention Autism Bucket Therapy. The children have particularly enjoyed exploring sensory tuff trays alongside their peers, making lavender playdough, and preparing and tasting healthy snacks.
