“Can you set up the Total Station?”
Your site supervisor asks.
You pause for a second.
You have used one before. A few years ago.
In fact, “Total Station” is right there on your CV.
But standing in front of the instrument again, you suddenly start thinking:
Where do I start?
Is the tripod positioned correctly?
How do I level this thing again?
Which controls do I need?
And how confident am I that my readings are actually right?
This is something that does not always get talked about.
Knowing something on paper and being confident doing it on site are two different things.
Skills can get rusty. Equipment changes. And sometimes, you simply have not used a particular instrument for a while.
That's where practical training can make a real difference.
You get the equipment in front of you again.
You set it up.
You make mistakes.
You ask questions.
You try again.
And eventually, that feeling comes back:
“Yes. I remember how to do this.”
The image is from a practical surveying session at Alex D&D Training Ltd, working with a Leica TS15 Total Station.
So, here is the question for anyone in construction or surveying:
Have you ever had a skill listed on your CV that you had not used for years and then suddenly had to prove you could still do it?
we would be interested to hear your experience.

755,000. That's how many additional construction workers the UK needs by 2030, according to a new National Audit Office report.

Construction already has the highest rate of hard-to-fill vacancies of any UK sector 45% vs a national average of 27%. And the government's own £625m skills package is at risk, not from lack of demand, but from an apprenticeship pipeline running far below target.

Translation: the advantage sits with people who are already qualified and ready to move up whether that's a higher CSCS card, site supervision, or the surveying skills the £725bn infrastructure pipeline will need.

We help people close that gap, from Level 2 NVQ to Level 7 Senior Management, plus GNSS, Total Station and AutoCAD training.

Do you know which CSCS card matches your role?
Many construction professionals assume the CSCS White Card is just another entry-level requirement. It is not. It is reserved for a specific group.

Who applies for the White Card?
Architects, structural and civil engineers, quantity surveyors, project managers, chartered builders, and other professionals who need site access but are not carrying out manual trade work.
Who qualifies?
There are two routes into the White Card:
🔹 Academically Qualified Person (AQP) – for those holding a construction-related degree, HND, HNC, or an approved CIOB/NEBOSH qualification.
🔹 Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) – for members of a CSCS-approved professional body such as ICE, RICS, CIOB, RIBA, or IStructE.
Both routes also require passing the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment (MAP) Test before applying.
If your role puts you on site as a professional rather than a tradesperson, the White Card is likely the one that fits you, not a Green, Blue, or Black card.

At Alex D&D Training, we help learners and employers identify the correct CSCS route and build the qualifications and NVQ pathways that support it.
📩 Not sure which card applies to you? Get in touch and we will help you find out.
