Schools must ensure they process requests for SEND students in a timely manner.
Otherwise, they risk paying hefty fines in case of unnecessary delays that inconvenience parents and their kids.
Case in point:
The Social Care Ombudsman recently reported that a school had failed to update a SEND child's Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) records to match those of a new area they moved to. This caused the pupil to miss 7 months of learning!
The school had to pay the child's mom £3,600 and issue them an apology for the inconvenience.

Should the Department for Education (DfE) have put attendance and behaviour under the same inspections category?
Sir Martyn Oliver, Ofsted boss, doesn't think this was the right move.
Here's why.
This is because schools in underprivileged backgrounds could record higher cases of absenteeism. But this doesn't mean that kids from these backgrounds have poor behaviour.
Perhaps the DfE could focus more on finding solutions for the challenges stopping children from attending school, and assess behavioural issues separately.

School children have no business using phones during school hours. They are too distracting and make cyberbullying more prevalent, to mention a few.
It's for this reason that the Department for Education (DfE) issued guidance on the use of mobile phones in schools. It advises trusts and schools on the measures to implement the right policies.
Is the DfE making the right move?

The UK has recorded lower birth rates in the last decade.
One of the most affected areas has been Jersey. According to a recent report, the number of recorded births on the island has plummeted by 30%!
This has led to a decline in the demand for early years and primary schools. The result is a negative ripple effect on funding, making it harder for school leaders and trusts to run learning institutions effectively.
It's time for stakeholders to investigate the reasons for the lower birth rates and find solutions.
