Our music lesson has no sheet music, no instruments, and no rules. 🥁
Just pots, pans, wooden spoons, and whatever rhythm today’s group decided on. Turns out you don’t need a triangle and a xylophone when you’ve got a saucepan lid and complete creative freedom.
This is loose parts play in action, and yes, it’s actually on the EYFS curriculum, not just a happy accident. That racket is doing some real work:
-Expressive Arts and Design (making music, exploring sound and rhythm) - Communication and Language (listening, taking turns, following a beat together)
-PSED (because a group jam session is really a lesson in cooperation with extra noise)
Also it’s very, very loud. We regret nothing. friends

From crayons to council bins 🖍️♻️

Enfield Council asked our children to design a poster for the new recycling bins in Trent Park. They drew what they know best, the trees they climb, the birds they spot, the park they call their classroom.

Now their artwork is on bins across the park, reminding everyone: “The future of Enfield is in our hands.”

This is what learning through play looks like. Real projects, real purpose, real pride. Our children didn’t just draw a poster, they became advocates for the place they love.

This is what Monday looks like at Tree House Friends 🌿

Two invitations set up today: an ocean-themed water tray and natural loose-parts art.

At the water tray, children were sorting sea creatures, ice, stones and crabs into a “habitat” narrating who lives where, floating vs sinking, and working together to fit everyone in.

That’s Understanding the World (exploring float/sink, ocean animals) and Communication & Language (turn-taking, describing) happening without a worksheet in sight.
Over on the ground, leaves, feathers, sticks and paint became a spray-art collage. Choosing colours, pressing sponges, layering natural materials on cardboard — that’s Expressive Arts & Design and Physical Development (fine motor control) in full swing.

No instructions, no right answer, just open-ended materials and time to explore. This is what EYFS looks like outdoors, children directing their own learning while we scaffold in the background.

Thursday at Tree House Friends 🌲

Letters in the leaves. Numbers carved from wooden cubes. No worksheets in sight.

This is how our children explore early literacy and maths — through play, outdoors, with their hands.

It might look like “just playing,” but here’s what’s actually happening:

📚 Communication & Language + Literacy, recognising letters, making the link between symbol and sound, building the foundations of reading.

🔢 Mathematics, sorting, counting and spotting shapes in three dimensions. Holding a wooden cube teaches number in a way a flashcard never can.

🙌 Physical Development, every grasp, stack and balance is fine motor skill in the making.

This is EYFS in action. Learning that sticks, because it starts with curiosity rather than instruction.
