📚Homework battles already starting? 📚Here is how to protect your child's confidence this term.
Hi everyone! I am a local Key Stage 2 tutor. Now that the first full week back at school is underway, the initial excitement is winding down, and the reality of new school years, harder maths, and homework is setting in.If you notice your child getting defensive, upset, or shutting down over their schoolwork this month, it is rarely because they "can't do it"—it is almost always an anxiety response to a sudden jump in curriculum difficulty (especially in Years 4, 5, and 6).
To keep the peace at home and build their academic resilience, try these three low-pressure strategies:
⏰ 1. The 20-Minute Timer: Don't let homework stretch into an evening-long battle. Set a visual timer for 20 minutes. Tell them: "We will stop when the timer goes off, no matter how much is done." This removes the feeling of endless frustration.
🧠 2. Praise the Process, Not the Score: Instead of saying "Brilliant, you got it right!", try shifting to: "I love how hard you tried to figure that out, even when it was tricky." This rewires their brain to value effort over perfection.
❌ 3. Celebrate the Mistakes: Normalize errors! Show them your own mistakes. When they see that making a mistake is just data on how to get better, their fear of failure disappears.I specialise in identifying exactly where a child’s learning gap is and presenting simple, visual, and stress-free solutions that build long-term confidence.
I have a couple of online KS2 tutoring slots available for the new autumn term. If you would like to secure a regular, supportive weekly slot to keep your child feeling capable and ahead of the curve, please feel free to send me a private message!
