Today I had fun with one of my students using exercise 66 from the Stick Control book, you may want to try this. At the bottom of the page is an instruction to play each exercise 20 times. Well that’s ok but to have some fun we went through some ideas to make it interesting.

Firstly we added feet so played 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the bass drum with hihat on 2 and 4 to give the exercise some context.

Then we doubled up playing the as written notes and then using the same sticking using 16th notes and back again.

Then we played the hands on different surfaces, ride cymbal with snare, floor tom with snare.

Lastly we looked at accenting the right hand notes.

Importantly there was lots of counting throughout the variations to make sure we knew where we were.

That friends was a creative near hour of fun exploring one simple thing. You may want to try this yourselves and then place it in your favourite groove, that would be the next step!
