We were delighted to welcome Arminel Lovell, Henry Meech, Annabelle Nolan and Charlotte Tracy who spoke about their careers since graduating and how their Durham Geography degree helped them.

British Council scholarships for Women in Stem 2026

This year three of our MSc courses – MSc Climate Change, Environmental Processes and Sustainable Futures, MSc Climate, Risk and Society and MSc Environmental Hazards and Risk have been selected to be on the list of eligible courses for this year’s British Council Scholarships for Women in Stem scheme: https://www.durham.ac.uk/study/scholarships/international/british-council-scholarships-for-women-in-stem/

The scheme will pay for up to 15 female students from a list of European countries (see country list below) to undertake an MSc at Durham. The funding includes full tuition fee payment, 12 months stipend, return flights from home country, visa application fee, NHS surcharge and insurance for each student. The linked page above gives information about the scheme and how to apply. The deadline for applications is 1st April 2026.

British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM - Durham University Gratefully supported by the British Council, Durham University is delighted to announce five fully funded scholarships for female students from wider Europe (detailed eligible country list is shown below) interested in pursuing master’s studies in the 2026/27 academic year.

We were sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Roderic Dutton in 2025, who was a member of staff in the geography department from 1972-2002.

This obituary outlines his achievements.

Today we celebrate the achievements of Vice Admiral Andrew Burns CB OBE, awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science for his distinguished Royal Navy career and his sustained engagement with Durham University.

His leadership across global naval operations and his commitment to sharing expertise in innovation and service reflect the impact of his work nationally and internationally.

Polar Medal Award Kings Hons Jan 2026 - Durham University Two of our leading geographers, Professors Colm O’Cofaigh and Dave Roberts, have received a prestigious Polar Medal from King Charles III.

We welcomed four alumni back to the Geography Department on 20 November to take part in our career talks to students.

Huge thanks to Lucy Blakemore, Emil Beddari, Rosie Hill and Matthew O'Neil for joining us and sharing your experiences with our current students.

Job Opportunity

Training Programme and Client Liaison Officer

Grade 5 (£14.80/hour - £17.38/hour)

28 July-28 November 2025

12-18 weeks Part -time (working 7-40 hours per week, depending on schedule of planned activities)

IBRU, the Centre for Borders Research within the Geography Department at Durham University are looking for a self motivated individual to take on a short term post to support a project within the department.

This is classed as a casual role for a minimum of 12 weeks, possibly extended to 18 week and to start on the 28th July 2025 or as close to that date as possible.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual who will support IBRU’s External Relations Manager in the design, administration and delivery of the training programme and to work closely with the government officials to ensure a smooth running of the programme.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in international relations, politics, UK government agencies and/or international law as well as an interest in learning more about border management topics. The candidate will have the opportunity to sit in on elements of training being delivered to the client if desired.

Some travel will be required to London and Northern Ireland, possibly for multiple days at a time. There may also be some weekend working required.

It will be based in Durham.
