Old 68th Society

A great first proper outing for our North Africa impression of 9 DLI at Yorkshire Wartime Experience at the weekend where we portrayed a DLI Headquarters & Regimental Aid Post (RAP). This would have been behind the frontline as a command post and was a place where injured men were taken for First Aid before getting moved to hospital. 9 DLI were in North Africa 1941-1943.

Our WWIl section is back on home turf again this weekend at Beamish Museum!

Once again representing the territorial soldiers of the 9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, as they were mobilised, trained, and equipped as war was declared in September 1939. You'll find us up at Home Farm. Museum opening times 10-5 both Saturday and Sunday.

We were honoured and proud to be invited to Dreghorn Barracks in Edinburgh, home of 3rd Battalion, The Rifles for their Salamanca Day celebrations today to support a narrative of the Battle of Salamanca, 1812. After the heat and wearing our woollen uniforms a well deserved drink or two was the order of the day!

Our WW1 section had a great day on Saturday at North Lincolnshire Armed Forces Day at Normanby Hall.

A big thank you to everyone who came along and chatted to us. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and look forward to seeing you again at future events!

The Old 68th Society Napolonics section was pleased to support the 8th Rifles Band at yesterday's Band in the Park concert at Wharton Park, Durham.

Alongside an afternoon of excellent music, we enjoyed demonstrating the uniform and equipment of the 68th Regiment and sharing a little of its history with visitors. A thoroughly enjoyable day in the park!

We’re encouraging residents to join the 8th Battalion the Rifles, and their military band and bugles, for a fun-filled day of military music at Wharton Park.

It’s all part of the Rifles Freedom Concert which will be to celebrate ten years since the park’s reopened following a significant revamp.
Starting at 11am, visitors will be treated to :
🎵 Durham Music Wind Band morning workshop with the Rifles
🥘 Food and drink stalls including Caps Off Brewery, Grandpas Fish Bar and Street Coffee Co.
🔫 Paint ball and exhibition stalls
🪡 Craft activities for families
💪 Fitness coach from L K Health and Wellbeing
🥁 At 1pm, the 68th Society will be performing and carrying out re-enactments in memory of the Durham Light Infantry in the parks amphitheatre.
🎺 Residents will then be able to enjoy the concert from 2.30pm until 3.30pm.

There is no need for visitors to book, and seating will be available in the park’s outdoor amphitheatre on the grassed banks.

The concert comes at a poignant time as the day marks 82 years since D-Day. To mark the occasion, the cultural, heritage and registration venue, The Story Durham, will be lit up in commemoration.

Another great day at Beamish again on Sunday! Thanks to all who came to see us over the weekend.
