Archaeology at Durham University

Come join us at the Sedgefield East Park Archaeological Findings event! The event will take place on Thursday 30th July, 1.45-2.30pm at Sedgefield Parish Hall and will feature a talk by Jamie Armstrong from Archaeological Services, Durham University who will present the findings from the 2026 excavations at East Park. From 3pm there will also be a free drop-in 'show and tell' session where visitors and their families can view artefacts recovered from the site including Roman pottery, spindle whorls, a quern stone and small finds.

On the 18th July, the Department of Archaeology's MSc Conservation students took museum conservation out of the lab and into Durham University's Museum of Archaeology at Palace Green.
Through a range of family friendly hands-on activities, visitors discovered how STEM and the humanities work together to investigate, preserve, and understand objects from the past. From testing out conservators' PPE, examining materials under a microscope to becoming museum pest detectives and reconstructing damaged artefacts, participants gained a unique insight into the world of museum conservation.
A huge thank you to our MSc Conservation students and the Museum of Archaeology and Palace Green team for making the event such a success!

More young people in the North East will have the opportunity to explore technical careers in environmental science thanks to a new project supported by the Natural Environment Research Council.

Led by our technicians, the initiative will create work placements for T Level students, helping them develop valuable experience in a sector with growing demand for technical expertise.

Building on a successful pilot, the project will work with colleges, industry and regional partners to raise awareness of technical careers, strengthen pathways into the profession and help shape future T Level policy and curriculum development.

Our Department of Archaeology is contributing to this important investigation at the mother-and-baby home in Tuam, Galway, led by ODAIT. Training and consultation continue to be provided by our world-leading experts Professor Rebecca Gowland and Dr Claire Hodson to ensure that the latest research is being utilised to help resolve this important and highly emotive case.

Archaeology at Durham University

📣Applications now open for a fully-funded AHRC PhD studentship at Durham on ‘Corbridge Roman Town: Economy and Society on the Edges of Roman Britain’, in partnership with English Heritage!

This project will use archival and artefact research to shed light on the role of Roman Corbridge in the social and economic networks of the Romano-British frontier from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD.
