Discussion: Language Rights

Join us for an engaging discussion on the critical issue of language rights, exploring how linguistic diversity shapes identity, culture, and access to opportunities. This session will delve into the challenges faced by minority language communities, the role of the UN in preserving linguistic heritage, and how we, as individuals adhering to the UN mindset, can contribute.

In his talk titled “Turning over old stones: Palestine Mandate Papers 1914-1939 Reappraised” the independent scholar Dr. Peter Shambrook, author of Policy of Deceit, will be speaking to us on the history of British imperial involvement in Palestine.

Dr. Shambrook is an independent scholar specializing in modern Middle Eastern history. With a PhD from the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Cambridge University, he has a deep understanding of the region’s historical dynamics. Currently, he serves as a historical consultant for the Balfour Project, where he works to promote equal rights for all in Palestine/Israel.

On the occasion of the International Day of Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, Dr Oliver Belcher from Durham’s very own School of Government and International Affairs will be providing us some of the insights he has gained from his years of researching military affairs from a critical and environmental perspective. His previous research on the topic includes: Hidden Carbon Costs of Global US Military Operations (2023) and Military Carceral Logics from Vietnam to Afghanistan, funded by the British Academy. Dr Belcher is also on the editorial board of Environment and Planning C: Politics and Space.
