On any given night, somewhere in a quiet home, a small child has just heard the same fairy-tale for the hundredth time and still asked their mother to read it again.
They have done classical work, even if no one has called it that.
They have named the characters, followed the order of events, kept the words of the song that comes at the end exactly as they were the night before. That is grammar. They have, perhaps, asked the small question of why the wolf came, and what would have happened if the youngest brother had stayed at home, and whose side we are on, and why. That is dialectic. And if they have, in the long bright morning that follows, told the story back to their younger sister in their own words, or drawn the wolf at the kitchen table, they have done rhetoric, in a child’s own size.
The older traditions of teaching have never been far from the bedside. They have simply waited for us to name them again.
May the story you read with them tonight be the one they remember when they are grown…

Unsure what classical education looks like? Just came across this lovely wee post from our sister community in Africa that lays out one example perfectly!

She takes something as ordinary as reading a bedtime story and beautifully shows how it naturally reflects the three classical arts that make up the Trivium. It's such a simple illustration, yet a powerful reminder that classical education isn't old-fashioned or outdated. It's woven into the everyday moments of family life.

Classical education isn't about making life more complicated, it's about recognising and nurturing the way children naturally learn.

If you'd like to learn more, have a read through her description. She explains the three stages of the Trivium—Grammar, Dialectic and Rhetoric—and shows how we often implement them naturally without even realising it.

Who else has a child who loves being read to at bedtime... or really, at any time? 📚 Mine certainly did, and those storytime moments are some of my favourite memories.

The Foundations years can feel like the smallest part of the work. The songs, the chants, the timeline verses, the geography songs that get repeated until the youngest of them is sleep-singing the words at three in the morning. There is no obvious yield, no essay to read, no thesis defended.
But the Foundations years are not where the big work is being done. They are where the soil is being made. The thinking that will, in time, fill the dialectic years, the speaking that will fill the rhetoric years, all of it grows from the soil being laid now. Song by song. Walk by walk. Hadeda by hadeda.
It can be hard to trust the smallness of it. It can be harder still to trust the slowness. But the harvest is being prepared in this season, and not in another.
May the songs you sing this week settle quietly into the long shape of who they are becoming…

Learning together, one small step at a time. ❤️

I am sharing this encouraging post from a sister CC community in South Africa. I loved how simply it captures the heart of our Foundations programme.

"Trust the smallness of it, trust the slowness, because the harvest is being prepared in this season."

Sometimes it can be hard to fully see the depth and fullness of the learning taking place when the children are having so much fun while singing songs, telling stories, playing games, and engaging in practical, hands-on activities. Yet these seemingly simple moments are laying strong foundations and planting seeds that, over time, bear wonderful fruit.

Foundations is full of small, faithful moments that build upon one another. Day by day, week by week, these little seeds take root, and in time we begin to see the fruit. 🌱✨
