It was lovely to finally meet Neil from Unite for Education last night, as well as Jennifer Melle. What an encouraging evening! 🙌

There are so many people doing really good work across Scotland and right here in Dundee, to improve education and create better opportunities for our children. It was great to hear different perspectives, share experiences and be reminded of just how much is happening behind the scenes.

It was also lovely to see some familiar faces and meet plenty of new ones too. There’s something really encouraging about getting a room full of people who care about education, connecting with one another and having conversations that are leading to real change.

I’ve honestly lost count of how many times we’ve asked ourselves this question over the last 12 years of home educating our children. And I know I’m not alone in asking it!

It’s funny, because if we had chosen to send our children to school, would we ask ourselves this question over and over again?

I don’t think we would.

We would trust that they were being taught, that their teachers knew where they were up to, and that their education was moving forward.

And yet, we know there is no way any school curriculum can teach a child absolutely everything, with no gaps whatsoever.I went through the school system myself and, looking back, I can certainly see things that were missed out!

So why do we put quite so much pressure on ourselves when we home educate?

Perhaps it’s because we see everything!

We see the days that don’t go to plan.
The subjects we didn’t get around to.
The books that are still unfinished.
The things they seem to have forgotten that we were sure they knew! 😂

And because we are the ones making the decisions, it can sometimes feel as though we are responsible for filling every single gap.

But we’re not.

I have to keep reminding myself to trust the process and trust the path we’ve been placed on. And yes to ask the right questions that are more helpful! 😉

Our choice to home educate was never solely about academics. It was always about something much deeper than that.

Of course academics matter. We want our children to learn, grow and develop the skills they need for whatever comes next.

But education is so much bigger than a list of subjects ticked off at the end of the year.

Sometimes the learning we notice most isn’t the learning we planned at all.

So, if you’re sitting asking the same question -

Take a breath.

Look a little closer.

You might be surprised by just how much learning has happened and how much growing has happened too. ❤️

Scotland, we are standing on the edge of something significant, In just a few days, we will gather in Dundee for a night of vision, clarity, and practical equipping. An evening that matters for the children, our communities, and the future of education in this land.

This is more than an event. This is a call to rise, a call to stand together, a call to make a difference for the good.

We will be joined by various exhibitors and great speakers, voices carrying wisdom, experience, and hope for Scotland’s education landscape.

Teachers, parents, students, home educators, church leaders, community leaders, those who are concerned and want to make a difference for the good of education and our nation this evening is for you.
