Meanwhile somewhere in Lanarkshire. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to just grab some notes and go visit the farm where I can break away from the city. Having a writing system based on index cards and Zettelkasten is great for many reasons, one of them being that I can leave the laptops behind and yet remain completely functional and immersed.

Crypto-Futurism: Waiting for the Good Companion 26/07/2019

My paper on on technology and the notion of crypto-futurism has been accepted! I'll be presenting it at the Futures Thinking Inaugural Conference that will take place at the University of Oxford, Wolfson College on 1-3 October 2019. Taking part in this event that will bring together so many different thinkers is truly exciting. More material will follow in due course; meanwhile, here's an abstract of the paper.

Thinking with Writing 12/10/2018

"Traditionally we understand ‘concepts’ and ‘notions’ as being the basic components of thinking, but I would like to suggest that without insights those notions and concepts are but static data. It is precisely an insight that sets the thought in motion. In fact, an insight is the very evidence, artefact, or trace of that motion. And this is, I claim, where writing starts: not with choosing the ‘right’ or ‘most interesting’ concept out of a myriad of other ‘less interesting’ concepts, but with capturing our insights. In other words, instead of jumping right into choosing a topic and following some (undoubtedly effective and very useful) academic writing manuals, it might be worth focusing on what our own insights have to offer first."

Thinking with Writing ESSAY WRITING Thinking with Writing A Guide for the Perplexed Writers Oct 12, 2018 How to think with writing? Or, more specifically: how to do a real work and write on what we do care about, instead of feeling that we are merely indulging in self-obsessive musings or producing pretentious and forced...

What Thinking Is Not? 11/08/2018

The distinction between thinking and what appears to be thinking is one of the most interesting philosophical problems. The whole history of philosophy testifies to the emancipative efforts of thought positing itself against the consumptive mental preoccupations such as mulling on the past, worrying about the future, and engaging with the emergencies of the present. However our right to have space and time to think is still rarely acknowledged or appreciated.

What Thinking Is Not? ESSAY PHILOSOPHY What Thinking Is Not? Jul 26, 2018 Designed by the architect Enric Miralles as “contemplation spaces” or “think pods,” recessed window seats in the Scottish Parliament are there for MSPs to contemplate and come up with ideas. The design, however quirky and (in my view) taste...
