Everyone talks about better clinical skills.
No one talks about designing the room where that’s actually possible.
If your appointment times are fixed, your documentation is awkward, and you have no clear protocol for what happens next, that’s not a skills problem.
That’s a design problem.
And it’s fixable.

My train was delayed so thought I’d put this out to see what my colleagues thought? Would love to know what you do or what you believe is the best way to onboard a new patient into the hygiene services regarding periodontal health!!
Do you have a dedicated hygienist onboarding appointment for your new patients?
If you do, you will already be reaping the rewards! If you don’t, it can be the cause of continuous uphill struggles with hygiene/periodontal patients and in how you best manage the different types of patients. I have delivered this appointment for most of my career as a dental hygienist and have taught others too, and I can honestly say I credit this appointment and how it is delivered to the successful periodontal and health outcomes my patients have achieved. It does take some planning, some designing and embedding it into your practice as a whole system, and of course, each dental hygienist and therapist must be running the appointment in the same way, AND the whole team must be able to communicate it to the patient for it to be a consistent, high-value service.

How do your team manage cancellations? Preventing cancellations, begins with the patient knowing the importance of their appointment, the business team should have a way of them understanding that too and have a goal of supporting the patient to attend their appointment to improve their oral health 🦷🤍
