Today we had Mark Booker with us from SCIAF to speak with all our students about the work that SCIAF does in Malawi 🇲🇼 this is part of our month long challenge that will begin tomorrow to virtually walk from St Joseph’s College to Lilongwe. During this month we are trying to raise our thoughts, prayers, and actions to those who are struggling across the world 🌎 and the importance of UNCRC for everyone- no matter where they are born. If anyone is willing to sponsor our challenge then please use the link https://www.justgiving.com/page/sjclilongwesept2026?utm_medium=FA&utm_source=MT

Past pupil and local Illustrator Sheri Lennon visited our Creative Industries National 5 class this week. A valuable opportunity for students to learn about what it is like to be self-employed and to hear about Sheri's experiences working with clients from Dumfries to New York. Students had the opportunity to create their own character and experienced using technology to create Art. We would like to thank Sheri Lennon for a very inspiring afternoon!

This September, pupils and staff are taking on an exciting whole-school challenge, ‘The Long Way to Lilongwe!’

Together, we will attempt to cover the virtual distance from Dumfries to Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi which is a staggering 9,000 km away!

Everyone taking part will set their own personal distance challenge and contribute kilometres by walking, running, cycling, swimming or taking part in other physical activities. Every kilometre will be added to our whole-school total as we make our way towards Malawi.

However, this challenge is about much more than simply covering a specific distance. We will also be raising money for SCIAF, the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, with over half of the population living below the poverty line. SCIAF is working with communities to provide emergency support including food, clean water and financial assistance, while also helping families build greater resilience for the future.

Thursday Run Club 3.30pm – 4.15pm
Mr Bremner and other staff will support pupils with a weekly after-school Run Club, completing laps Dock Park. Walk, jog or run, absolutely everyone is welcome!

Parkrun at the Crichton – 12th and 19th September
We are also encouraging pupils to get involved with our fantastic local parkrun. Our pupil Parkrun Ambassadors will help others get involved, with a particular push for participation on 12th and 19th September.

The challenge is being led by our Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group as part of our journey towards the RRSA Gold Award. This means that as a school community we are putting children's rights, participation and positive action at the heart of everything we do at st Joseph’s College.

One school. One challenge. One incredible journey.

Congratulations to Madelene (S3), who enjoyed a fantastic achievement over the summer after being awarded a fully funded place by the Naval Children’s Charity to attend the British Youth Musical Theatre Residential in York.

During the residential, Madelene also completed her Grade 6 Level 3 Musical Theatre examination through Mountain View Exams, achieving a merit.

This is a significant achievement, reflecting the considerable preparation, performance and independent work required at this level. Congratulations, Madelene.

Congratulations to Isabella (S5), who won Gold in National 2 at the Magnum Open on Friday. A fantastic achievement.
