Learner drivers in Dumfries and Galloway are facing lengthy delays, with the average wait for a practical test in Dumfries now sitting at 15.5 weeks. The

Changes to the driving test from 24 November 2025:

• reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3

• lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7

• adding flexibility to the independent driving segment (this can be following a sat nav, traffic signs or both) to run for the full duration of the test

These changes are designed to improve the overall flow of the test and better reflect real-world driving conditions.

DVSA Announcement on Driving Test Bookings

You may already have heard about the recent DVSA post regarding the booking of driving tests. The Association was not advised of the survey results prior to the press release being issued. We understand that this may cause some concern; however, further research has provided the following clarification:

The changes announced today will not take effect until around the summer of next year. Until then, everything remains the same. When the new system is introduced, only learner drivers will be able to book their own tests. In addition:

🚗Learners will be limited to no more than two changes to their test date.
🚗Moving tests to a different test area will no longer be permitted.
🚗Your current ability to notify the DVSA of your availability will remain in place to help avoid double bookings.
